Mine Approval Could Limit Public Access

From Staff

Approval of Asarco Mining Co.’s proposed Rock Creek mine could limit public access along U.S. Forest Service roads in the Cabinet Mountains of Montana.

Protests over the proposed closure of part of the Chicago Peak Road (Forest Service Road 2741) prompted the Forest Service and Montana Department of Environmental Quality to consider closing part of the Rock Creek Road instead if the mine is approved.

The public has until Oct. 19 to comment on the latest plan.

The latest proposal calls for closure of a total of 2.9 miles of the Rock Creek Road (Forest Service Road 150) in two parts, including 2.5 miles that would be closed with a gate on the ridge in the southwest quarter of Section 8.
