Ten years ago: In a farewell speech to the U.N. General Assembly, President Reagan saw “a moment for hope” for peace in the world, citing a new U.S.-Soviet treaty to sharply reduce nuclear arms due during the following year.

Five years ago: Eight people emerged from the glass dome of Biosphere Two in the Arizona desert after being sealed inside for two years in an experiment dogged by setbacks and controversy.

One year ago: An Indonesian Airbus A300 crashed while approaching Medan Airport in north Sumatra, killing all 234 people aboard.
