Making A Difference Don Fries
Eighth-grade American history teacher at Shaw Middle School 38 years in education
It’s tough being original after doing the same thing for decades, but Don Fries manages. No other teacher plays “Ramblin’ Rose” during class or rhapsodizes over the virtues of the Pierce Arrow (automobile). This middle school history teacher blends the discipline of the armed forces with humor to create an atmosphere that encourages students to excel.
From “Squad Leaders” in charge of their rows to “gimme” test questions like “When was the war of 1812?” Fries’ unique style is something students don’t soon forget. His style is particularly effective with adolescents, who wander into school unsure of who they are and what they should do and find direction in Fries’ stability.
“I remind myself that it’s all new for them even though it’s old for me,” he says. “Everything you do impacts their lives.”
