Andy Van Pelt Completes Internship On Capitol Hill

Gonzaga University student Andy Van Pelt fulfilled a summer internship with the office of Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., in Washington, D.C.

Van Pelt, a sophomore majoring in business administration, is the executive vice president of the Gonzaga Student Body Association. He described his experience on Capitol Hill as “a wonderful opportunity and an honor.”

Anthony House of Spokane was honored for excelling in the National Recognition Program for high school scholars by the Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Iowa last spring.

The program recognizes 10th-grade students who demonstrate high aptitudes in English, mathematics, reading or science by virtue of their scores on the PLAN tests.

House is a student at Gonzaga Preparatory School.

Michael F. Goularte Jr. enlisted with the Army in the infantry and recently departed for basic training at Fort Benning, Ga.

Goularte is the son of Connie Goularte of Coeur d’Alene and is a 1997 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane.

Christopher Swallom of Spokane graduated this spring magna cum laude from Concordia University in Portland. Swallom received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration, accounting and financial management.

Air Force Airman Joel Gordon Frogner has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Frogner, a 1997 graduate of Mead High School, is the son of Karen and Gordon Frogner, Colbert.

Heidi L. Craig has been awarded a President’s Scholarship from the University of Washington for the 1998-99 school year.

The awards are given each year to freshmen with high academic achievement, leadership potential and civic involvement. Only Washington state residents are eligible. Each scholarship is worth $4,822.

Craig is a graduate of West Valley High School.

Jennifer Nicole Cusick graduated this spring from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor of science degree in recreational management. She is a member of the National Dean’s List.

Cusick is a 1994 graduate of Mead High School and is the daughter of Greg and Georgi Cusick, Spokane.
