Levi Strauss May Close Four Plants

From Staff

Levi Strauss & Co., one of the world’s largest clothing makers, said it may close four plants in Europe and cut 1,461 jobs, or about 20 percent of its European work force, because of declining demand for its denim jeans in the region.

The company, known for its namesake Levi’s jeans and its Dockers casual pants, said it’s looking at proposals to close three factories in Belgium that employ 931 and one plant in France with 530 workers.

The moves follow the company’s announcement Monday that it was closing two pants in Texas and firing 991 employees, or 9 percent of its North American manufacturing work force.
