Haydn Morgan Spokane

Memorial service for Haydn P. Morgan, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 50-year Spokane resident, Mr. Morgan died Sunday. He was born in Carbonado, Wash.

He married Evelyn Phillips in 1939.

Mr. Morgan served as the vice president and merchandise manager of The Crescent department store and later as vice president of Fidelity Mutual Savings Bank.

He was co-founder and a member of the board of directors at Phenneger and Morgan Inc., served as vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees at Whitworth College, trustee emeritus and treasurer of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, co-founder and treasurer of the Union Gospel Mission, president of the Spokane Better Business Bureau, member of the Welsh St. David’s Society, a board member of the Inland Auto Association, vice president of the Spokane Rotary Club 21 and served as president of the Spokane Music Festival Association.

Mr. Morgan also was a member, deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church. He sang in the church choir, was a soloist and quartet member, and was a frequent participant in the community church production of the “Messiah.”

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Claudia Phenneger of Coeur d’Alene and Gwyneth Humble of Tacoma; a sister, Mary Nelson of Port Ludlow, Wash.; three grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, The Haydn and Evelyn Morgan Music Scholarship Fund at Whitworth College or the Union Gospel Mission.

Lorena Sanborn Spokane

Memorial service for Lorena Sanborn, 89, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sanborn, who was born in Hayes, Kan., died Monday.

She graduated from West Valley High School in 1930 and in 1931 married Delmar Sanborn. He died in 1969.

Mrs. Sanborn was a homemaker and a charter member of Millwood Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a son, Donald Sanborn, and a daughter, Jane Keevy, both of Spokane; a sister, Frances Dierken of Spokane; three grandchildren and two greatgrandsons.

Maude Rutherford Spokane

Graveside service for Maude B. Rutherford, 90, will be at 1 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rutherford, who was born in Yukon, Okla., died Monday.

She moved to Spokane in 1912 and attended Garfield, Bemis and Stevens elementary schools. She earned her high school diploma while attending night school.

Mrs. Rutherford was a homemaker and a member of Knox Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Gerald, died in 1971.

Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine Elliot of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Carole Freier of Palm Springs, Calif.; a son, Joseph Rutherford of Spokane; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Ina Muzatko Spokane

Memorial service for Ina L. Muzatko, 91, will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 36-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Muzatko died Sunday. She was born in Plaza, N.D.

Mrs. Muzatko was a homemaker.

Her husband of 60 years, Richard, died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Robert Muzatko of Tekoa, Wash.; two daughters, Marilynne McKell of Spokane and Janet Sanders of Yuma, Ariz.; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Eva Frieske Ritzville, Wash.

Funeral for Eva Frieske, 86, will be at 11 a.m. today at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Vault burial will be at the Lind (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mrs. Frieske, who was born in Lind, died Sunday.

She grew up and attended schools in Lind, and in 1934 married Bill Haase. He preceded her in death, and she married Ted Frieske in 1966. He also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Frieske was a homemaker. She moved to the Adams House in Ritzville in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Haase of Spokane; a daughter, Frances Sadler of Renton, Wash.; three sisters, Frieda Rott of Seattle, Bertha Schrader of Moses Lake and Martha Acuff of Pullman; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Richard Lasswell Pullman

Graveside service for Richard E. Lasswell, 85, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pullman City Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lasswell, who was born in Colville, Wash., died March 23.

He moved to Spokane, Omaha, Neb., Chicago, Aurora and Springfield, Ill., where he graduated from high school.

In 1940, he enlisted in the Illinois National Guard, serving on the 23rd ATR Cavalry RCN Squad. Later that year, he was inducted into the Army, serving as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Cavalry Squadron and 2nd Cavalry Group in Panama during World War II. He was transferred to Europe in 1944, fighting as a mechanized cavalry unit commander and reconnaissance officer in the North of France, Ardennes, Alsace and Central Europe campaigns.

He was critically wounded by a mortar in Aschafenburg, Germany, in 1945. Among his distinguished awards is the Silver Star.

Mr. Lasswell was honorably discharged in 1947 and in 1950 graduated with a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Washington State University.

He began a career at WSU as the publications manager in the Cooperative Extention’s bulletin department. He designed the current facilities and mechanical storage systems, which have since been copied by other agencies. He retired in 1975.

He married Elaine Thorson in 1960.

Mr. Lasswell was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and climbed Mount Adams two times.

His wife died in January.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Lasswell of Pullman and Philip Lasswell of Cheney; a sister, Lorraine Lasswell of DeSoto, Mo.; and two brothers, Robert Lasswell of Venice, Fla., and Jack Lasswell of Belleville, Ill.

Lorraine Mowbray Seattle

Funeral for Lorraine June Mowbray, 67, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Mowbray, who was born in Spokane, died March 21 in Seattle.

She worked as a medical receptionist for Dr. Robert Barnett and Dr. Fuller Hogsett, both in Spokane, for many years.

Mrs. Mowbray had been working for Dr. Jeffery Forey in Seattle for the past 17 years.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Denny; two sons, Denny Mowbray of Harrington, Wash., and Jeffery Mowbray of Fox Island, Wash.; four daughters, Marcia Smith of Post Falls, Jackie Hughes and Janice Loft, both of Spokane, and Michele Garrett of Monroe, Wash.; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Shriners Hospital for Children or the Spokane Blood Bank.

Frances Wilcox Denver

Private service for Frances E. Wilcox, 98, will be held at a later date. Sunland Mortuary in Sun City, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilcox, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

She served on the board of directors of the Spokane Chamber of the American Red Cross for many years.

She retired to Sun City in 1970 and moved to Denver in 1997.

She is survived by her brother, Bert Marden of Metaline, Wash.

Violet Brookshire Spokane

Visitation for Violet Irene Brookshire, 86, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Post Falls.

A longtime Spokane area resident, Mrs. Brookshire died Sunday. She was born in Spokane County.

Mrs. Brookshire owned and operated the Hamburger King restaurant in Spokane for many years. She also had been a waitress in various restaurants in Stateline, Idaho, over the years.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy Brookshire of Spokane and Lonnie Brookshire of Helena; two brothers, Marvin Stecker of Newman Lake and H.W. Stecker of Othello, Wash.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Billy Cunningham St. Maries

Visitation for Billy Keith Cunningham, 55, will be today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Memorial service will be April 13 at 11 a.m. at the St. Maries Elks Lodge.

Mr. Cunningham, who was born in Crandon, Wis., died Monday.

He grew up in St. Maries and served with the Marine Corps from 1960-64. He returned to the St. Maries area, where he worked for the Potlatch Corp. St. Maries Complex for 10 years.

Mr. Cunningham was working for Jack Buell Trucking Co. at the time of his death.

He was a member of the St. Maries Elks Lodge and the Eagles Aerie.

Survivors include his father, Keith Cunningham of Coeur d’Alene; and two sisters, Kitty Cunningham of Coeur d’Alene and Shelby Heptom of Spokane.

Gladys Jahns Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Gladys Mae Jahns, 88, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home in Spokane.

A 62-year resident of the Worley, Idaho, and Coeur d’Alene areas, Mrs. Jahns died Tuesday. She was born in Colbert.

Mrs. Jahns was a homemaker and a member of the Rockford Methodist Church and the Lakecreek Ladies Club.

Her husband, Harold, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Jahns of Othello, Wash., and Norman Jahns of Worley; a daughter, Betty Mills of Hepner, Ore.; 14 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Grace Fitzgerald Hayden Lake, Idaho

Graveside service for Grace B. Fitzgerald, 83, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Forest Cemetery, Old Post Section, in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fitzgerald, who was born in Seminole, Okla., died Tuesday.

She lived in Careywood, Idaho, before moving to Hayden Lake in 1950. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Everal.

Survivors include a son, Vern Fitzgerald; two sisters, Iva Fitzgerald of Texas and Velma Fitzgerald of Richland; and two grandchildren, Tristan and Diana.

Evesta `Eve’ Sweitzer Spokane

Viewing for Evesta Sylvia “Eve” Sweitzer, 72, will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Graveside service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mrs. Sweitzer, who was born in Wenatchee, died Monday.

She lived in Post Falls until moving to Spokane in 1958 and worked as a practical nurse from 1965 until she retired in 1983.

Mrs. Sweitzer worked as a housekeeper for Cliff Manor Nursing Home in Spokane from 1983-86.

Survivors include a son, Terry Campbell of Spokane; five daughters, Linda Lebeck of California, Tereasa Williams of Moses Lake, Jacqueline Nay and Billie Rae Kidd, both of Spokane, and Wyndie Moomay of Okanogan, Wash.; a brother, Sylvester Tibbitts of Spokane; and three sisters, Audrey Hamilton and Bonnie Willoughby, both of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Pat Liberty of Spokane.

Jack Spencer Spokane

Funeral for Jack Spencer, 70, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Spencer, who was born in Richfield, Kan., died Monday.

He grew up in Las Animas, Colo., moving to Spokane in 1967.

Mr. Spencer worked as a custodian for Spokane School District 81 for 14 years.

Survivors include his former wife, Margaret; two daughters, Linda and Jackie Spencer, both of Eureka, Calif.; two sons, Alan Spencer of Spokane and William Spencer of Eureka; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Linda Meyer Hayden Lake, Idaho

Service for Linda A. Meyer, 51, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. A reception will follow at the Yates Hayden Chapel Gathering Center. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Meyer, who was born in Colusa, Calif., died Monday.

She grew up in California and graduated from high school in 1965. She married Jim Meyer in 1970.

Mrs. Meyer lived in Santa Barbara, Calif., and worked as a secretary at the University of California until moving to Hayden Lake in 1989.

She worked as a secretary at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum, and was a member of the Lakeland Booster Club, the University of Idaho Vandal Boosters and the Ladies of the Rimrock. She also was involved in the Children’s Homes Society in California.

Survivors include her husband of more than 28 years; three daughters, Kristin Bain of Twin Lakes, Idaho, and Lindsey and Natalie Meyer, both of Hayden Lake; her mother, Elizabeth Henderson of California; a brother, Gary Henderson of California; two sisters, Gail Dawley and Jane Watson, both of California; and one grandson, Nolan.
