Washington State blew a two-run, sixth-inning lead Friday night and dropped a 6-5 Pacific-10 Conference baseball decision to third-ranked Stanford at the Cardinal’s Sunken Diamond.

The Cougars’ bullpen gave up three runs, along with the lead, in the seventh and Stanford closer Tony Cogan set WSU down in order in the final two innings.

The Cougars (16-11, 1-4 Pac-10) jumped to an early lead by scoring three second-inning runs on Steve Gleason’s bases-loaded walk and Shawn Stevenson’s two-run single.

Stanford (22-10, 8-0) answered with Joe Borchard’s three-run homer in the sixth, but WSU regained the lead in the seventh on run-scoring singles by Bookie Gates and Jason Grove.

Stanford had five hits in its decisive three-run seventh.

Washington’s Tyson Boston belted a two-run homer in the first game and teammate Jeff Carlson pitched eight innings of five-hit ball in the nightcap as the visiting Huskies (17-8, 6-2) scored a 6-3, 2-1 Pac-10 doubleheader sweep over Arizona (20-17, 3-8).

Ryan Hubka hit his fourth home run of the season and was one of five Linfield players with two hits as the Wildcats edged Whitworth 3-2 in a Northwest Conference baseball game at McMinnville, Ore.

Hubka’s blast ruined a resourceful pitching effort by the duo of Scott Yoshihara and Matt Squires, who combined to limit Linfield (12-8, 6-0 in NWC) to two earned runs, despite allowing 12 hits.

Whitworth (11-15, 7-3) scored its runs in the second on RBI singles by Nick Schuerman and Brian Maley.

Softball

Whitworth’s Heather Hedum drilled four hits - including two doubles and her fifth home run - and drove in seven runs, but couldn’t prevent the Pirates from dropping a Northwest Conference doubleheader to George Fox in Newberg, Ore.

The Bucs (5-15, 1-5 NWC) lost the first game 8-7 when George Fox rallied for six runs in the final two innings and dropped the second 8-5.

Janessa Karstens had five hits, one a double, in leading Community Colleges of Spokane to an 8-0, 4-3 sweep of visiting Bellevue.

Karstens also pitched the victory in the first game, striking out five.
