Ccs Softball Sweeps Into First Place

The Community Colleges of Spokane softball team (9-4 overall, 8-0 NWAACC) swept Wenatchee Valley College Tuesday, gaining 2-1 and 6-0 victories at Spokane Falls CC to take sole possession of first place in the NWAACC East Division. Both teams entered 6-0.

Janessa Karstens (4-0) allowed only one earned run while pitching the first-game victory for CCS. She went 3 for 3 in the second.

In the extra-inning opener, Stephani Shelton scored the winning run on an error after WVC threw the ball out of play while trying to throw her out at third base.

North Idaho College was swept by Central Washington University at Coeur d’Alene’s Memorial Field, 4-3 and 3-1.

In the first game, CWU scored the winning run on an error after NIC (13-14-1) had led 2-0.

CWU scored two more unearned runs in the 11th inning to win the nightcap.

Baseball

The Community Colleges of Spokane rode the solid pitching of David Hixson and George Petticrew for a doubleheader sweep of Big Bend CC in NWAACC baseball action at Spokane Falls.

CCS (8-6, 2-2) won the opener 5-4 and the nightcap 2-0.

In the first game, Hixson struck out six and walked two in 6-2/3 innings to pick up his third win of the season.

Aaron Vandarwarka knocked in the winning run in the top of the sixth inning.

Petticrew (1-1) pitched a two-hit shutout in the second game, striking out eight and walking four.

Wrestling

USA Wrestling reported that the Avista Corp. XXVII World Cup of Wrestling set an attendance record of 18,003.

The two-day event was held in the Arena last weekend. The United States won the team title, defeating Iran, the 1998 world champion. The final session drew 6,032 spectators.

Boxing

Spokane boxer Mahlon Kerwick won twice in the 132-pound weight class of the Las Vegas regional Golden Gloves Championship featuring competitors from Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Nevada.

He defeated Jose Giron of Arizona on Monday and James Ramos of Portland on Tuesday to advance to nationals May 9-15 in Syracuse, N.Y.
