Obituaries

Edwin Sweet Spokane

Funeral Mass for Edwin H. Sweet, 84, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sweet, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.

He was raised and attended schools in the Wenatchee Valley, later working for the Standard Oil Co. in California and Yakima for 11 years.

Mr. Sweet became an independent Chevron Dealer and operated a station on Northwest Boulevard for 32 years.

He was a member and past president of the Washington Gasoline Dealers Association, a member of the Boy Scouts of America, St. Charles and St. Thomas More Catholic churches, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Spokane Assembly and a charter member of the Rotary Club of North Spokane. He also was a member and served on the board of directors for the Deer Lake Property Owners Association and was an honorary life member of the Brotherhood of Friends Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; three sons, Dave and Pat Sweet, both of Spokane, and LeRoy Sweet of Olympia; two daughters, Kathy Hess of Colbert and Barbara McKee of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Elmer Sweet of Wenatchee; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, or the Visiting Nurse Association, 3901 E. Main, Spokane 99202.

Kenneth Mott Ione, Wash.

Visitation for Kenneth Mott, 86, will be from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Graveside service will follow at 10 a.m. at the Newport Cemetery.

Mr. Mott, who was born in Cocolalla, Idaho, died Monday.

He graduated from Grandview (Idaho) High School and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Mott married Daisy Dolly in 1944 and they lived in the Yakima area until 1974, when they moved to the Blueslide, Wash., area near Ione.

They moved to Cheney in 1984 for nine years before returning to Blueslide.

Mr. Mott was a sheep rancher and a member of the Locke Grange, Pend Oreille County Historical Society, Washington Jockey’s Club, Washington State Horsebreeders Association and the Washington Wool Growers Association.

His wife died in 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Mott of Cusick, Wash., and Bill Mott of Spokane; a daughter, Linda Buchanan of Spokane; two brothers, Harold Mott of Anacortes, Wash., and James Mott of Langley, Wash.; two sisters, Bessie Leese of Greenbank, Wash., and Polly Tinnies of Anacortes; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jon `Dave’ Hauger Sr. Spokane

Visitation for Jon D. “Dave” Hauger, Sr., 59, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fairchild Air Force Base Chapel.

A 15-year Spokane resident, Mr. Hauger died April 3. He was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

He married Marcia Warren in 1964.

He served in the Air Force for 27 years and retired as the assistant deputy director for operations at the survival school at Fairchild Air Base in 1988. He was a lieutenant colonel.

He had been working as a real estate agent for Tomlinson Black Realty in Spokane for the past 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia; two sons, Steven Hauger of Spokane and Jon Hauger Jr., of Las Vegas; a daughter, Kristen Burk of Spokane; a brother, Ellis Hauger Jr., of Leesburg, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Goudy of Hudson, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Lewis Anglin Spokane

Private family service for Lewis I. Anglin, 80, was previously held. A 20-year Spokane resident, Mr. Anglin died Sunday. He was born in Wadley, Ga.

He served in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a master sergeant after 28 years.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ruth; a daughter, Barbara Craig of Spokane; a sister, Irene Langdon of Atlanta; a brother, Harold Anglin of Fort Worth, Texas; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Snyder Newport, Wash.

Private family inurnment for Marjorie Edith Snyder, 82, will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Snyder, who was born in Hartford, Conn., died Sunday.

She married Milton Snyder in 1937 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Snyder lived in Western Washington for many years while her husband worked for Boeing.

After his retirement in 1969, they traveled for several years before settling in Newport.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Romero of Priest River; a son, Wayne Snyder of Airway Heights; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Katharine Olsen Olympia

Visitation for Katharine Elizabeth “Kay” Olsen, 82, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home in Spokane. Rosary is planned for 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Spokane. Forest Funeral Home in Olympia is in charge of arrangements.

A former 69-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Olsen died Saturday. She was born in Emmett, Idaho.

She married Odin Olsen in 1947 and worked as a medical librarian at Deaconess Medical Center.

Mrs. Olsen was a longtime member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and Altar Society in Spokane.

She moved to Olympia a short time ago.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Carl Olsen of Gulf Shores, Alaska, and Tom Olsen of Olympia; a daughter, Doretta Lee of Dallas, Ore.; two brothers, Hugh Lalor of San Marcos, Calif., and Joe Lalor of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Irene Brausen of Moscow, Idaho; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Howard Kroske Spokane

Memorial service for Howard Hugo Kroske, 86, will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 61-year Spokane resident, Mr. Kroske died Saturday. He was born in Rockford.

He served in the Army as a paratrooper in Germany during World War II.

Mr. Kroske later worked as a salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Velma; two sons, Bill and Terry Kroske; a brother, Bob Kroske; and one granddaughter.

Jean Simmons Spokane

Graveside service for Jean D. Simmons, 51, is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Simmons, who was born in Chewelah, Wash., died April 1 after injuries suffered in a automobile accident in Moses Lake.

She graduated from Cheney High School in 1965 and from Eastern Washington University in 1969.

Ms. Simmons taught school in Richfield, Wash., until 1972 when she began working for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. She was working there at the time of her death.

She was a member of the Do-Si-Do Square Dancers and the Washington State Wool Growers Association.

Her husband, Don Ligon, died in 1996.

Survivors include her mother, Winnie Simmons of Cheney; and two brothers, Pat Simmons of Federal Way, Wash., and Don Simmons of Cheney.

Del Waterhouse Spokane

Graveside service for Del R. Waterhouse, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Waterhouse died Sunday.

He served in the National Guard and later retired from working as an estimator for Washington Water Power.

Mr. Waterhouse was a member of the Washington Water Power Trail Blazers.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores; three daughters, Lori Waterhouse of Spokane, Linda Benge of Otis Orchards, and Allisa Jones of Keizer, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

Dempsey Barnhart Coeur d’Alene

Service for Dempsey Marion Barnhart, 86, will be at 10 a.m. Friday the Sandpoint Christian Center. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Cheney. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Cheney, Mr. Barnhart died Sunday.

He grew up and attended schools in Spokane and married Marion Libby in 1935.

He lived in Colville, Wash., and Cheney prior to settling in Sandpoint in 1950.

In 1951 he moved to Careywood, Idaho, and established the Careywood Community Church in 1952. He worked as a logger and commercial roofer.

Mr. Barnhart also had pastored a church in Athol, Idaho, and served with other area churches.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1997.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include 10 sons, David Barnhart of Medical Lake, Philip, Charles and Paul Barnhart, all of Careywood, Gary and John Barnhart, both of LaGrande, Ore., Robert and James Barnhart, both of Minnesota, Daniel Barnhart of Coeur d’Alene and Timothy Barnhart of Rathdrum, Idaho; two daughters, Mary Hogan and Ruth Fisher, both of Nebraska; a brother, Harold Barnhart of Spokane; 45 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

John `Bob’ McFarland Puyallup, Wash.

Memorial service for John Robert “Bob” McFarland, 84, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. A reception will follow at Sandpoint First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. McFarland, who was born in Sandpoint, died Sunday.

He grew up in Sandpoint and then earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California in 1936, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

Mr. McFarland returned to the Sandpoint area and married Geri Littlefield in 1939. They raised Aberdeen Angus cattle and joined the family business, McFarland Pole Co. of Sandpoint, in 1936.

He served as director and officer of many industry associations in North America and Europe and traveled extensively.

Mr. McFarland was an elder at the Sandpoint First Presbyterian Church and spent recent winters in Arizona.

He moved to Puyallup shortly before his death.

Mr. McFarland was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include four children, Deena McClain, Julie Rawson, Corry and Greg McFarland, all of Washington state; and six grandchildren.

Jessica Haller Rathdrum

Memorial service for Jessica Nicole Haller, 18, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rathdrum.

Miss Haller, who was born in Spokane, died March 13 in a automobile accident near Granite Hill in Bonner County.

She moved to Rathdrum in 1984 and attended John Brown Elementary School and Lakeland Junior and Senior high schools.

Miss Haller had recently completed her senior year and was scheduled to participate in the graduation commencement at Lakeland High School in June.

She was a member of the Prairie Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rathdrum.

Survivors include her parents, Deborah and Russell Wiemers of Rathdrum; two sisters, Mandy Haller of Coeur d’Alene and Amber Haller at home; a brother, Adam Wiemers of San Diego; her grandparents, June and Donald Olson, Billie Haller, Cathy Haller, and Lloyd and Gail Wiemers; and her great-grandmother, Hazel Hill.

Ernest Calistro Spokane

No service will be held for Ernest F. Calistro. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Calistro, 66, died Sunday. He worked as a janitor for many years, including at the Spokane Credit Bureau and Montgomery Wards.

Survivors include a brother, John Calistro; and seven sisters, Francis Zalick, Leona Harris, Jo Maurer, Madeline Yeager, Anita Pirello, Julia Costello and Mary Wallace.

Lauren Veeder Spokane

Memorial service for Lauren H. Veeder, 61, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Veeder, who was born in Watford City, N.D., died Monday.

He served in the Air Force from 1955 until 1959, later working for Columbia Lighting in Spokane for 40 years.

Mr. Veeder was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 73.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Joan; a daughter, Vicki Streng of Spokane; and two granddaughters.

Georgia (Hunt) Powers Coeur d’Alene

Service for Georgia Mae (Hunt) Powers, 85, is planned for Friday at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Hunt Cemetery in Kingston.

Mrs. Powers, a longtime Silver Valley educator, died Friday. She was born and raised in Kingston, Idaho, and was a member of the first graduating class of Kingston High School in 1930. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho, where she studied art, literature and early childhood education.

Mrs. Powers also attended Gonzaga University in Spokane and North Idaho College.

In 1937 she married Patrick Powers.

She taught at Pinehurst Elementary School for many years and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Lady Elks, the Pinehurst/ Kingston Lady Lions and had been involved with the Knights of Pythias.

Her husband died in 1995.

Survivors include five sons, Mike, John, Bob, James and Patrick Powers; a brother, Don Hunt, of Coeur d’Alene; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
