Spears, Moe Carry Colville

Joe Spears threw a one-hitter and Jeff Moe followed with a three-hitter, giving defending champion Colville a 14-0, 15-0 sweep at New port Saturday in the first Great Northern League baseball games for both teams.

Spears and Moe struck out seven apiece in five innings. Josh Elmer’s single in the opener broke up Spears’ no-hitter.

Brandon Wear’s two-run homer ignited Colville’s 11-run third in the opener. Wear and Ryan Bradeen had four hits apiece for the day.

Also in the GNL, Dusty Druffel was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Pullman (1-1) defeated visiting Chewelah 16-6 in five innings to salvage a split.

Chewelah (1-1) won the opener 19-9, as Sam Washington, Phil Eggleston and Jeremy Miller were a combined 8 for 13 with seven RBIs.

Pullman broke open a close second game with eight runs in the fourth on two hits, four walks, three errors and two hit batters. Lucas Svaren and Nick Paulson of Pullman, and Washington and Kevin Olson of Chewelah were 2 for 3.

Alexis Alexander hit a fourth-inning grand slam and visiting Medical Lake (2-0) defeated Riverside 18-5 to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Josh Earley had three hits and four RBIs in the opener, a 16-6 Cardinals win. Alexander also had three RBIs in the first game.

ML’s Brent Kaplan was 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the second game. Brandon Morris doubled in both game for the Rams (0-2).

Track and field

West Valley’s Brad Groh won the boys triple jump and both hurdles races during the Titan Invitational at University.

Groh triple-jumped 44 feet, 6 inches, ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.5 seconds and completed the 300 hurdles in 40.6.

Matt Dillon of Ferris won the shot put (58-7-1/2) and discus (144-1). U-Hi’s Anthony Buchanan won the 100 in 10.7. The Titans won five other events.

The girls meet had no double winners. East Valley dominated the distance races and longer relays.

Freeman’s John Russell ran 4:16.02 to place fourth in the boys 1,600 at the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational. Winner Brian Turner of Omaha, Neb., ran 4:15.03.

Lewis and Clark’s Jamie Rosenquist ran 5:02.73 to place eighth in the girls 1,600. Chris Olinger of Rogers, 17th in the boys 3,200, ran 9:49.37.

Softball

Nicole Jones’ two-out, two-run single to right in the bottom of the eighth gave Medical Lake (1-0) a 12-11 win over visiting Riverside (1-1) in the GNL.

Hannah McConnell had a no-out, RBI double before Jones’ hit. Jaime Darby homered for Riverside.

Lacey Jones and Jennifer Riley combined for 13 RBIs during Kettle Falls’ three-inning, 39-0 win at Newport (0-3).

The Bulldogs (2-0) drew 28 walks. Jones’ first home run was one of five extra-base hits. Erin Miller had both Newport hits.

Chewelah (1-0) notched a 10-8 win over visiting Lakeside (0-1). No details were reported.

Boys soccer

Bret Baker scored three goals within an 11-minute span of the first half and first-place Riverside (6-0) reached its halfway point of the GNL season by defeating visiting Medical Lake 5-0.

Medical Lake is 2-5.

Ken Pegram fed Chris Dowers early in the second half for a goal that stood up in Deer Park’s 1-0 win over visiting Colville (2-5).

DP (4-2-1) tied idle Chewelah for third place.

George Souza had four goals in 50 minutes and Pullman (5-1) moved into second place with an 11-0 win over visiting Lakeside (0-8).
