William Twitchell Loon Lake, Wash.

Memorial service for William Albert “Bill” Twitchell, 87, will be at 11 a.m. today at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash.

Mr. Twitchell, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated from North Central High School in 1930 and married Dorothy Davis in 1931.

Mr. Twitchell attended the College of Commerce in San Francisco, and San Francisco and San Mateo (Calif.) Junior Colleges. He was commissioned an ensign in the Naval Reserves in 1938 and as a lieutenant commander in the Navy in 1946. In 1956 he graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Mr. Twitchell served with the amphibious forces during World War II, particpating in landings in both the Pacific and Atlantic. He also served with the support forces during the Korean War.

He spent the remainder of his 35-year naval career at the Pentagon, serving on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Finance, and on the staff of the Navy Inspector General. He was the special assistant to the Navy Chief of Information at the time of his retirement in 1970.

Mr. Twitchell was twice awarded the George Washington Honor Medal by the Freedoms Foundation, and was the holder of the Nation’s Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.

He returned to the Spokane area after his retirement, cattle ranching in Stevens County for seven years.

Mr. Twitchell and his wife built their home on Deer Lake, Wash., where they had owned property for 50 years. He was the founding president of the Deer Lake Property Owners Association and served as president of the Southern Stevens County Council. He also was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the American Angus Association.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Joan Higgenbothan of Santa Maria, Calif.; a son, Larry Twithchell of Hedgesville, W.Va.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frank Emerson Spokane

Funeral for Frank V. Emerson, 68, was held Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial was at the Lewis and Clark Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lewiston.

Mr. Emerson, who was born in Lenore, Idaho, died Thursday.

He attended Genesse (Idaho) High School and the University of Idaho, where he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and in 1953 graduated with a degree in agriculture.

Mr. Emerson was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps from 1952 until 1953, and in 1954 enlisted in the Army, where he was stationed in Ulm, Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1955 as a first lieutenant.

In 1956 he received his Washington state teaching certificate. He taught high school in Pateros, Wash., for five years.

Mr. Emerson worked as a pharmaceutical representative from 1961 until 1967 and was the owner and operator of Fastest Way Motor Freight for 27 years. He also worked at Shopko for four years.

He was a member of the Manito Golf and Country Club and the University of Idaho Alumni Association.

Mr. Emerson had been a part-time resident at Priest Lake, Idaho, for the past 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a son, Michael Emerson of Spokane; a daughter, Lynn Sturgeon of Eagle, Idaho; a sister, Mary McDowell of Priest Lake; and five grandchildren.

Jean Lolos Post Falls

Memorial service for Jean E. Lolos, 75, will be at 2 p.m. today at Telford’s Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee. Private burial will be at the Hamilton Cemetery in East Wenatchee.

Mrs. Lolos, who was born in Wenatchee, died Thursday.

She grew up in East Wenatchee and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1942.

In 1944 she married Walter Craig, and they lived in Peshastin, Wash., where they operated an orchard and wheat farm for 20 years.

In 1968 she married Clare Chapman and moved to Spokane where she worked as an executive secretary at Whitworth College for several years.

Her second husband died in 1991, and she married Peter Lolos in 1992. They moved to Post Falls in 1994.

Mrs. Lolos was a member of Heritage Congregational Church, Spokane Knife and Fork Club, Order of Eastern Star in which she served as Grand Ruth for the state Of Washington. She also was member of the Daughters of the Nile.

She was a supporter of the Spokane Symphony and volunteered for many years at the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Survivors include her husband, Peter; a daughter, Rhonda Anderson of Leavenworth, Wash.; a son, Donald Craig of Park City, Utah; seven stepchildren, Peter Lolos Jr. of Wenatchee, Sandra Jo Lee of Bellingham, Peggy Owens of Yakima, Susan Winterowd of Colville, Wash., Lin Chapman of Auburn, Wash., David Chapman of Coeur d’Aleneand Tim Chapman of Spokane.; a brother, William Hamilton Jr. of Carson City, Nev.; two sisters, Edith Carstensen of Seattle and Sedalie Ulin of East Wenatchee; three grandchildren, 17 stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Wenatchee High School Scholarship Foundation.

Georgia `Cookie’ Owsley Spokane

Funeral for Georgia M. “Cookie” Owsley, 79, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A 78-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Owsley died Saturday. She was born in Colville, Wash.

Mrs. Owsley graduated from Rogers High School in 1936 and worked as a sales clerk at Payless Drug Store in downtown Spokane for 20 years.

She later worked as a cashier at Rosauers on the corner of Buckeye and Division, retiring in 1985 after 20 years of service.

Mrs. Owsley was a member of the Retail Clerks Union and Eagles Lodge 2 Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Burge and Jill Guilbeault, a son, Gary Owsley, and a sister, Vivienne Symbol, all of Spokane; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Naomi Daracunas Spokane

Visitation for Naomi D. Daracunas, 95, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Ford, Wash.

A 17-year Spokane-area resident, Mrs. Daracunas died Thursday. She was born in Yankton, S.D.

She was a homemaker and a member of Disabled American Veterans Post 6 Auxiliary and the Washington State Grange Association.

Her husband, Carl Daracunas, died in 1960.

Survivors include two daughters, Valera Mundhenke of Nine Mile Falls and Dolores Ward of Colbert; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Harriet Parks Spokane

No service will be held for Harriet J. Parks, 76, at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Parks, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

She spent a few years in Central and North Idaho with her family before returning to Spokane in 1928.

Mrs. Parks began her career in business as the first female employee at Kershaw’s Office Equipment Co.

She worked for the Western Union Telegraph Co. during World War II.

In 1963 she began working with the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, which later became the American Lung Association. She served as director and program director for Eastern Washington until her retirement in the early 1970s.

She was active in the anti-smoking and air-quality efforts in Eastern Washington, heading up the Swine Flu Program.

She married Leonard Parks in 1977, and they moved to the mountains in North Idaho in 1978 before returning to Spokane in 1992.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Stephan Gonzales; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Steve Ray Post Falls

Graveside service for Steve J. Ray, 41, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ray, who was born in California, died Sunday.

He moved from California to Post Falls in 1981 and had worked as a self-employed logger.

Survivors include his wife, Belva; two daughters, Tasha Ray at home and Jamie Maynard of Spokane; his father, Bill Ray of California; two brothers, Phil Ray of Everett and Paul Ray of California; and two sisters, Margaret Jarvis of Texas and LaShawn Thompson of Everett.

Ruth Waters Spokane

Memorial service for Ruth L. Waters, 84, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Lincoln Heights Congregational Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Waters, who was born in Clary, N.D., died Wednesday.

She married Thomas Waters in 1934. She worked in sales and was a vocalist for various funeral homes.

Mrs. Waters was a member of the Sheridan Mothers Singers, Good Sam Travel Club and was a 40-year member of Lincoln Heights Congregational Church, where she also held various offices.

Her husband died in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Morse of Spokane; three sisters, Della Kennedy of Clarkston, Wash., Marna Estep of Spokane and Lila Selig of Ketchikan, Alaska; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the Ronald McDonald House.

Carl Vig Spokane

Funeral for Carl James Vig, 82, was Monday at the Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A 37-year Spokane resident, Mr. Vig died Tuesday. He was born in Hazelton, N.D.

Mr. Vig worked for Kaiser Aluminum for 31 years and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty; three daughters, Kathleen Brown of Spokane, Cheryl Wilcox of Graham, Wash., and Judy Jasperson of Portland; a sister, Violet Bedford of Deer Park; two brothers, Chester Vig of Coeur d’Alene and Clinton Vig of Pardeeville, Wis.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Rev. James Estes Spokane

Memorial service for the Rev. James F. Estes, 70, will be at 1 p.m. today at Fourth Memorial Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 40-year Spokane resident, Rev. Estes died Thursday. He was born in Ottumwa, Iowa.

He graduated from Washington State University, Whitworth College, and Drake and Yale universities.

Rev. Estes pastored many churches throughout the Northwest and Iowa.

He was the author of a number of books.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle; a son, James Estes of Mesa, Ariz.; four daughters, Melanie Estes-Collins and Cynthia Bonebright, both of Spokane, Jamie Venters of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Dixie Thiesies of Bingen, Wash.; a brother, Walter Estes; a sister, Nadine Fuhrman; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

William Thomas Hartline, Wash.

Funeral for William O. Thomas, 66, will be at at 11 a.m. today at the Hartline United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Hartline Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas, who was born in Almira, Wash., died Thursday.

He was a wheat farmer for many years and was a member of the Hartline Grange. He was also a member and past president of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers in Grant County.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; two sons, Ron and Marvin Thomas, both of Hartline; a brother, Norman Thomas of Lincoln, Wash.; two sisters, Eileen Cox of Spokane and Belva Trexler of Barstow, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hartline United Methodist Church Handicap Access Fund or the Hartline Cemetery District No. 3 or the Hartline Fire Dept. and EMS.

Iris Campbell Deer Park

Graveside service for Iris Irene Campbell, 85, was held Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Campbell, who was born in Greenwood, Mo., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Pleasant Hill (Mo.) High School in the early 1930s and worked in fruit orchards in California and Washington for many years.

Mrs. Campbell moved to Deer Park from Niland, Calif., several years ago. She was a member of the Deer Park Community Church.

Her husband, Herbert, died in 1989.

Survivors include two sisters, Loretta Whisman of Deer Park and Louella Spinning of Spokane.

Maxine Burk Spokane

Graveside service for Maxine J. Burk, 73, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 35-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Burk died Thursday. She was born in Texas.

Mrs. Burk worked as a dietician in various hospitals and was a member of the Doll Club.

Her husband, Howard, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Burrow of Spokane and Lonnie Burrow of Bremerton; a brother, Lonnie Stonecipher Jr.; two sisters, Louise House and Yvonne Mygatt; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
