Exiting Standards Set For High Schools

From Staff

The state Board of Education has approved exiting standards that will require high school students to demonstrate their knowledge of math, social studies, science, health and language arts before graduating or advancing to the next grade.

The standards, approved Thursday, will take effect in the 2000-2001 school year.

Skills and knowledge that students will be required to demonstrate are detailed in a 60-page booklet developed by the Board of Education.

They include how to write clearly, how to assess the consequences of sexual activity, how to use math to solve problems drawn from daily life and what some of the struggles were in the United States for extending civil rights to minorities.

The standards have been controversial, with opponents saying they would remove local control over schools.
