No more empty bowls
Five churches have been working together for nearly a year to plan the “Empty Bowls” benefit soup supper from 2 to 6 p.m. on April 25, hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.
The meal will be served in hand-painted ceramic bowls which guests may take home as a reminder that someone’s bowl is always empty.
Empty Bowls is a nation-wide project started in Michigan in 1991 by the nonprofit organization Imagine/ Render, whose goal is to raise money and awareness of people who go to bed hungry every night. By churches of different denominations joining together, the project also encourages understanding and friendships among people of different faiths and races.
Congregations of New Hope Baptist Church, Unitarian Universalist, The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, St. Matthews Baptist Church and Temple Beth Shalom have worked on the project.
Cost: $10. (325-6383)
This sidebar appeared with the story: MEMORIAL SERVICE CHILDREN OF THE HOLOCAUST It is estimated that 1.5 million children were among the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust. These children will be remembered during a memorial service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th. A second service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at the Fairchild Air Force Base Chapel. “Children of the Holocaust: Honoring Their Memories” is the title of this year’s Holocaust remembrance at the temple. The Spokane Area Children’s Chorus will perform during the memorial. Young people from the temple and area churches will participate in a program of music, poetry and dramatic readings. Some of the poems were written by children who experienced the Holocaust. During the service, Eva Lassman, a survivor, will tell of her experience. Julie Scott, a teacher, will tell of her recent visit to Warsaw and how she intends to incorporate that experience into her classroom. The public is welcome to attend both services.
