WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY Othello

Elizabeth Galaviz was crowned Othello’s junior miss recently. Galaviz, along with the honor of gracing the community parade float all summer, was awarded an $800 scholarship. Her court includes KyLee Miller and Angie Mayer.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

A local man is recovering from severe burns after his home caught fire earlier this month. Jim Hendricks is expected to stay in Seattle’s Harbor View Medical Center throughout April. He was badly burned when his home, three miles west of town, burned to the ground. Friends and neighbors are raising money to help with expenses.

GRANT COUNTY Grand Coulee

There will be extra staff on duty at Grand Coulee Dam on New Year’s Eve. Craig Sprankle, spokesman for the Department of Reclamation, says the extra crew will be there “just in case,” although he doesn’t foresee any power problems. Sprankle admits power surges and fluctuations could occur, but says his staff has worked hard to make Y2K a non-event.

LINCOLN COUNTY Harrington

The Harrington High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted five new members last month. They are Jacob Timm, David Darling, Nathan Mielke, Wysteria Rush and Colin Floyd. All earned top grades to join the organization. Niels Peterson, the group’s adviser, noted their hard work and high-quality essays.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

Police Chief Bill Clark wants to make Newport a quieter town. The chief is looking into an ordinance to force drivers to turn down their stereos while in city limits. The city is reviewing similar ordinances in other cities and will design one for Newport. The proposal stems from several citizen complaints in recent months.

SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane

The Friends of the Spokane Public Library will host a new and used book sale Friday and Saturday at the downtown library, 906 W. Main, in meeting rooms 1A and 1B. Friday’s sale will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. for members only. A presale pass is required and will be available at the new member table. Saturday’s event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fiction, nonfiction, juvenile and young adult books will be priced at 50 cents each, and paperbacks at 25 cents each. STEVENS COUNTY Colville

The gavel has come down on two Colville-area burglars. Uriah S. Schoenwald, 18, and Riis C. Driggs, 19, were sentenced to 45 months in prison for one count of first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree burglary and one count of theft. The pair was found guilty of burglaries that occurred in October at Fritz’s Auto Repair, Advanced Automotive and the Colville Armory.

WHITMAN COUNTY Colfax

The Whitman County Association of Realtors is offering a $500 scholarship for a Whitman County high school student to put toward tuition or housing at WSU. Applications for the association’s eighth annual undergraduate award must be postmarked by May 1, 1999. Students should contact their high school counselors for an application package and qualifications. The winning applicant will be notified by May 21.

BENEWAH COUNTY Plummer

Heyburn State Park is teaming up with North Idaho AmeriCorps and VISTA members, Ducks Unlimited and St. Maries 4-H leaders to plant black cottonwood trees along the banks of Chatcolet Lake. The planting will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. The planting is part of an ongoing project to regenerate cottonwoods along the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene and the St. Joe River within the park. BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint

Bonner County officials will hold recycling education workshops this spring. The programs will show how to separate household trash for the best disposal options. The workshops will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following sites and times: Saturday, Idaho Hill Transfer Station; May 8, Wal-Mart parking lot; May 22, Dufort Waste Collection Facility; June 12, Dickensheet Transfer Station.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

Lake City High School Performing Arts and Youth Volunteers Association will host an improvisational theater event called “By The Way, Whose Line Is It?” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the LCHS Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and available at LCHS, Rosauers Ticket Outlet, North Idaho College and the American Red Cross in Coeur d’Alene. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross to provide food and medical supplies for Kosovo refugees.

LATAH COUNTY Moscow

Canadian poet Gary Geddes will present a free public reading of his works at the University of Idaho at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Life Science South Room 277. Geddes also will present a main address at the UI Honors Convocation at 3 p.m. Friday in Memorial Gymnasium. His speech is entitled “Operation Trojan Horse: A Canadian Poet’s Gift to the United States.”

SHOSHONE COUNTY Wallace

Jamie Winterset was appointed to the Wallace City Council on April 13. Winterset, owner of Great Northern Printing, replaced John Hansen, who resigned.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

Libby High School graduates Bill Luscher and Dale Shaurette will be inducted into the Academic Hall of Fame at 7:30 tonight in Ralph Tate Gymnasium. The hall of fame was established by the Koocanusa Chapter of the National Honor Society 15 years ago. Former principal Stan Evans will be the guest speaker. The event is held annually in conjunction with the induction of new National Honor Society members.
