State Offers Y2K Preparedness Classes

State officials will hold a Y2K training workshop today for residents and business owners preparing for possible disruptions in the year 2000.

The workshop - “Y2K: Will you be ready?” - begins at 9:30 a.m. at the classroom building of Riverpoint Higher Education Park downtown. The two-hour program will repeat at 1:30 p.m.

The workshops are part of a series presented in nine cities and sponsored by the governor’s Year 2000 Office. The workshops are free and open to the public.

Training will be offered in four areas: maintaining business operations; preparing homes and communities; safeguarding home computers; and fixing embedded computer-chip systems.

Officials say the year 2000 could trigger disruptions in computer-dependent systems if older computers and embedded chips misread the new year.
