Turner’S Gem Lets Ccs Keep Division Lead

Lydia Turner stepped in for injured teammate Janessa Karstens Tuesday afternoon and pitched a one-hitter to give Community Colleges of Spokane an NWAACC doubleheader sweep of visiting Yakima Valley Community College.

Turner, with Karstens sidelined by a knee injury, struck out three and walked only one in raising her record to 2-0 with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Sasquatch won the opener 7-2 and maintained their hold on first place in the Eastern Division standings with a 13-1 record.

Sara Harchuck drove in a pair of runs in support of Turner’s pitching in the second game, and Rachel Cox and Sara Schumacher each had two RBIs in the opener.

CCS’s Kylee Curry scattered eight hits and raised her record to 5-1 in the first game.

Baseball

Community Colleges of Spokane ran its winning streak to seven by sweeping Wenatchee Valley 8-6, 10-8 in a NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.

Dean Jacklin pitched five strong innings and struck out five for CCS in the opener, getting plenty of offensive help from Kevin Richardson, who scored four runs, and Brett Haiar, who drove in three.

Eric Garma, who doubled twice in the first game, also had a pair of hits and three RBIs in the nightcap, which featured a nine-run first inning by the Sasquatch.

Golf

Idaho freshman Julie Wells finished tied for seventh in the medalist standings of the Big West Conference golf championships, which concluded at SpurWing Country Club in Meridian, Idaho.

Wells put together rounds of 76-74-77 for a 54-hole total of 11-over-par 227, which was 17 strokes behind medalist Sasha Medine, from New Mexico State.

Idaho finished fifth in the team standings at 950, which was well off New Mexico State’s winning total of 871.

Kylie Smith finished third in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 18-over-par 240 and led Eastern Washington’s women to a third-place finish in Idaho State’s Great American Video Bengal Classic at Juniper Hills Golf Course in Pocatello.

Montana State won the team title with a 967, followed by Weber State (977) and EWU (984). Community Colleges of Spokane finished last in the seven-team field at 1,104.
