Volunteers Needed For Tree Planting
Volunteers are needed to help plant trees at Black Bay Park in Post Falls on Saturday.
In the fall, the U.S. Forest Service gave the city a $2,000 grant to plant trees in the park. That money will be used to purchase many of the trees to be planted on Saturday.
“This is kind of our Arbor Day and Earth Day tree planting,” said Nolan Phillips, urban forester for the Parks and Recreation Department. “It’s kind of a native park, so we’re just planting native species.”
Volunteers will plant 16 large white pines that are 15 to 20 feet tall, 15 aspen, 10 western larch and some native species of shrubs.
The Forest Service is donating the white pines from its nursery in addition to the grant. Further, the grant requires that some of the volunteers to do the project be Forest Service employees.
The planting will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at the park and will be followed by a free picnic. To volunteer, call (208) 773-0539 or (208) 773-8147.
