Sweep Helps Nic Continue Winning Ways

Paula Paterson pitched a two-hitter and Cheryl Andrizzi followed with a five-hitter during North Idaho College’s 4-3, 4-1 softball sweep over visiting Colorado Northwestern on Saturday.

Paterson (7-12) allowed a two-run double in the first before settling down. NIC (17-22, 6-10 Scenic West Athletic Conference) scored on an infield error in the seventh to force extra innings. Mandy Lawson singled to lead off the eighth, and scored on a one-out error by the catcher.

Andrizzi (10-10) struck out nine and scattered five singles. The Spartans (14-22, 4-11) gave up the four runs on a bases-loaded error by the pitcher in the fourth.

The Cardinals have won four consecutive games since snapping an 11-game losing streak.

Katie Carpenter pitched a four-hitter in the opener and earned the second-game win in relief as Whitworth (8-22, 4-6 Northwest Conference) swept Lewis & Clark 11-0, 5-4 at Portland.

Heather Hedum went 4 for 4 and had three runs in the opener. Ginger Ewing and Tiffanie Vander Veen were both 2 for 4, with triples, in the second game. The Pioneers are 14-19, 5-15.

Baseball

Steve Bennett (6-0) pitched a season-high eight innings and Jason Bay hit his club-leading 14th home run, leading Gonzaga to a 12-3 win and a split of a West Coast Conference doubleheader with visiting Loyola Marymount.

The Lions (25-17, 13-6) won the opener 6-3 as Billy Traber (7-3) threw a complete game and struck out 13.

Bennett struck out eight and walked two. The Zags (21-16-1, 10-8) sent 10 men to the plate during the six-run sixth, capped by Bay’s two-run home run.

Leadoff hitter Jack Santora was 4 for 4 and scored four runs in UCLA’s 15-8 win over visiting Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference baseball.

Santora homered and doubled to send the Cougars (18-21, 1-13) to their 12th consecutive loss. UCLA (23-24, 7-7), which has won six consecutive league games, tied its season high for runs and hits (17).

Bruins freshman Josh Karp (6-3) allowed four hits and struck out five in 6-1/3 innings. WSU’s Ray Hattenburg extended his hitting streak to nine with a first-inning RBI single.

Also in the Pac-10, junior B.R. Cook pitched a four-hitter and struck out a career-best 13 in Oregon State’s 6-3 win over Washington in Seattle.

Joe Gerber had a solo homer and two-run double for the Beavers (15-29, 3-11). Jeff Heaverlo (8-2) had a four-game winning streak snapped and the Huskies (26-13, 8-6) saw their seven-game streak ended.

Jack Arthaud and Eric Brown homered, and Whitworth (14-21, 10-7) defeated Lewis & Clark 8-5 to split a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Portland.

Justin McKitterick added a 3-for-3 effort, with two RBIs, to help make a winner of Kevin Daling. The Pioneers (8-19, 3-13) won the opener 4-3 in 11 innings. Whitworth’s Scott Yoshihara struck out 11 in 10 innings.

Brent Dayton pitched six innings and reliever Kris Granlund finished with three shutout innings as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Blue Mountain CC 9-3 to complete a sweep at Spokane Falls CC.

George Petticrew threw a complete game, striking out eight, in the 5-3 first-game win. Josh Ervin and Rob Cannon combined on a 3-for-6 effort, with three RBIs.

Aaron Vandarwarka had three hits, three runs and three stolen bases to help wrap up the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges sweep. CCS (14-11, 8-7) has won eight consecutive games.

Golf

Washington State University women’s golfer Stefanie Coleman (78-73-151) is in a four-way tie for 16th place after the second day of the Women’s Golf Pacific-10 Championships at the par-72 Stanford Golf Course.

The Cougars are facing tough Pac-10 play, competing against seven Top-20 teams, including No. 2 Arizona, No. 5 Southern California and No. 6 Arizona State.

No. 10-ranked Stanford (580) is leading team play by 14 strokes after two rounds. WSU is tenth. Two-time defending Pac-10 champion Arizona is in a tie for second place with a total of 594.

Julie Dunn (72-69) of Stanford leads the indivdual title race with a three-under par score of 141.

Tennis

Sarah Ust and Rachel Gillis swept the first doubles after Gillis won her second singles match Saturday, helping the Gonzaga University women defeat Saint Mary’s 7-2 and advance to today’s fifth-place match in the West Coast Conference championships at Santa Clara, Calif.

Gonzaga, sixth-seeded, will play No. 4 Portland this morning.
