G-Prep Debaters Qualify For State Championship

Gonzaga Prep’s Mock Trial Team, led by junior Lisa Conley, daughter of Robert and Theresa Conley, and coached by Andre Cossette, took second place in the district competition, qualifying the team for the State Mock Trial Championship this spring.

Team members include junior Amanda Barratt, daughter of James and Audrey Barratt; freshman Katie Conley, daughter of Richard and Mary Conley; junior Adam Gill, son of Connie Johnson; junior Laura Kogler, daughter of Charles and Barbara Kogler; freshman Kristine Konecny, daughter of Patrick and Brenda Konecny; junior Patricia Migliuri, daughter of Donald and Karen Migliuri; freshman Joey Parry, son of Edward and Julia Parry; sophomore Travis Smith, son of Ray Smith; and freshman Angela Ready, daughter of Nancy Ready.

Sarah Short, a senior at Liberty High School, has been chosen by Centre College in Danville, Ky., to receive a merit scholarship for prospective freshmen students.

Short also has been invited to become a faculty scholar at the college, based on her high school academic record and scores on college entrance exams.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Short, Spangle.

Donald Frisque graduated from Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Ga.

He previously earned an Army Achievement Medal and ran with the 10-miler team in Washington, D.C.

He is the son of Tom and Donna Frisque, Usk, Wash.

Jonathan Trainor has received a $3,000 Boeing Scholarship for Eastern Washington University, based on outstanding academic achievements.

Trainor is a junior at EWU majoring in mechanical engineering technology and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

A 1996 graduate of Newport High School, He is the son of John Trainor, Newport, and Annie Clark, Fairbanks, Alaska.

Two area high school seniors have received Honors Scholarships at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.

Genevieve Green is a student at Medical Lake High School, and Devon Van Dyne attends University High School. The scholarships range from $3,500 to $6,000 and are renewable for three additional years for students maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Gunar Swenson has received the Navy and Marine Corps’ Achievement Medal for his outstanding initiative and contribution in helping the command fulfill its mission while serving as supply petty officer at Naval Air Facility in Misawa, Japan.

Swenson is the son of John and Vale Swenson, both of Spokane.
