Obituaries

Caroline Clarno Cheney

Graveside service for Caroline A. Clarno, 82, will be at 11 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home in Cheney is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Whitefish, Mont., Mrs. Clarno died Friday.

She moved to Springdale, Wash., in 1922 and graduated from Springdale High School in 1934.

Mrs. Clarno moved to Sprague, Wash., in 1942, where she worked as a bank teller at the Old National Bank for 11 years. She retired in 1968 and moved to Cheney.

She was a 20-year member of Cheney Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband of 31 years, George; two sons, Rodney Reed of Rosalia, Wash., and Dennis Reed of Davenport, Wash.; a daughter, Phylis Cousins of Eagle River, Alaska; two brothers, Bill Costich of Mead and Elroy Costich of Springdale; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

George Maitland Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for George Wallace Maitland, 94, will be at 11 a.m. today at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Maitland, who was born in Medimont, Idaho, died Friday.

He grew up in the Medimont area and graduated from Cave Lake School. He worked locally in the timber industry and also lived on the West Coast briefly.

Mr. Maitland joined the Pile Drivers Union in 1941. He worked construction in Alaska for seven years and settled in Coeur d’Alene in 1953.

In 1954 he married Grace Ross.

He worked locally until retiring in 1970.

Mr. Maitland was the Idaho State Cribbage Champion in 1996.

His wife died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, Bud Maitland, and a daughter, Jeanne Sargent, both of Hoquiam, Wash.; his nurse and companion, Helen Anderson of Coeur d’Alene; 15 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Lloyd Edstrom Spokane

Funeral Mass for Lloyd V. Edstrom, 83, was Monday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Edstrom, who died Thursday, was born in Worthington, Minn.

He moved to Spokane in 1924.

Mrs. Edstrom was a building contractor and operated Edstrom Builders in Spokane.

He was a member of the Homebuilders Association, Down River Golf Course and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Regina; a daughter, Gloria Duggan of Olympia; a brother, Robert Edstrom of Post Falls; and three grandchildren.

Minnie Ashbaugh Colville, Wash.

Funeral for Minnie J. Ashbaugh, 92, was Monday at Danekas Funeral Home in Colville. Burial was at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville.

Mrs. Ashbaugh, who was born in Kearney, Neb., died Wednesday.

She grew up in Kearney and later attended college for two years and received a teaching certificate.

Mrs. Ashbaugh taught school in 1929 and married Glenn Ashbaugh in 1930.

She then moved to East Port, Idaho, where she farmed for six years.

In 1936 Mrs. Ashbaugh moved to Colville, where she was a homemaker and continued to farm.

Her husband died in 1992.

Survivors include two sons, John Ashbaugh of Evans, Wash., and Jim Ashbaugh of Greenacres; two daughters, Barbara Baxter of Greenacres and Carol Campbell of Auburn, Wash.; a sister, Ella Beers of Torrington, Wyo.; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Robert Bridgham Spokane

Funeral for Robert Jackson Bridgham, 87, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

A 63-year Spokane resident, Mr. Bridgham died Friday. He was born in Walla Walla.

Mr. Bridgham worked as an electrician and was a Boy Scouts leader for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Alice; a daughter, Betty Healy of Spokane; two sons, Robert Bridgham of Spokane and Dennis Bridgham of San Diego; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Charles Emry Seattle

Funeral Mass for Charles G. Emry, 76, will be at 10 a.m. today at Mount Saint Michaels Catholic Church in Spokane. Burial will follow at the Holy Rosary Cemetery at Mount Saint Michaels. Bonney Watson Park Chapel in Burien, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

A former 74-year Spokane resident, Mr. Emry died Friday. He was born in Spokane.

Mr. Emry worked at Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood for 36 years and moved to Seattle a short time ago.

His wife, Louise, preceded him in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda and Joanne Emry, and Sister M. Providencia Emry.

John Jarvis Spokane

Funeral for John Jay Jarvis, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jarvis died April 20. He was 71.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Jarvis worked as an engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad for 41 years.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Donna; two daughters, Roxann Harber and Candy Turner, both of Newman Lake; two sisters, Carol Lilly of Elk and Jane Ebner of Eugene, Ore.; a brother, Melville Jarvis of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Charles Greaser Spokane

Funeral for Charles F. Greaser, a 33-year Spokane resident, will be at 11 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Greaser, who was born in San Francisco, died Wednesday. He was 70.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Ruth; a son, Jeff Greaser of Post Falls; two daughters, Eunice Dunn of Cody, Wyo., and Karen Trowbridge of Wilsonville, Ore.; five sisters, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Kathleen `Kitty’ Ford Spokane

No service will be held for Kathleen A. “Kitty” Ford, 66, at her request. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Rockford. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

A 22-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Ford died April 15. She was born in Santa Cruz, Calif.

She graduated from Santa Rosa (Calif.) High School and then received a degree from Santa Rosa Junior College.

Mrs. Ford later lived in San Francisco for many years before moving to Spokane.

She worked as an accountant and tax prepare and was the co-owner of Ford and Marsh Accounting for several years.

Mrs. Ford was the co-founder of the Rockford Water Gardens. She was a member and past treasurer of the Spokane Dog Trainers Club and was a recipient of the prestigious Phideaux Award.

Survivors include four daughters, Jan Hansen of Spokane, Karen VanVoorhis of Rockford, Ellen Evans of LaGrande, Ore., and Diann Horn of Martinez, Calif.; her mother, Lillian Nash, and a brother, Bill Nash, both of Santa Rosa; and a sister, Bev Suminski of Castro Valley, Calif.

Marjory Ayars Spokane

Funeral Mass for Marjory A. Ayars, 59, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ayars, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

She worked in the payroll department for Keytronic for 15 years and as a housekeeper at Manor Care Nursing Home for three years.

Mrs. Ayars was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Anderson and Marilyn Rasmussen, both of Spokane, and Christine Croson of Lemoore, Calif.; four sons, Brian Ayars of Spokane, Wayne Ayars of Vancouver, Wash., Harold Ayars of Plummer, Idaho, and Ken Milne of Casper, Wyo.; two foster daughters, Christine Roberg and Jamie Knowles, both of Spokane; a sister, Maureen Cavanaugh; and 15 grandchildren.

John Peters Spokane

Visitation for John L. Peters, 98, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be Friday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.

A 45-year Spokane resident, Mr. Peters died Friday. He was born in Andrew County, Mo.

Mr. Peters owned and operated Cummins Diesel Sales in Spokane for many years.

He was a lifetime member of the Manito Masonic Lodge and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Scottish Rite Bodies and the El Katif Shrine.

His wife of 76 years, Neva, died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Lewis Peters of Otis Orchards; two daughters, Shirley Lease of Otis Orchards and Beverly Miller of Spokane; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Glen Fuchs Potlatch, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Glen J. Fuchs, 74, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Potlatch. Inurnment will be at Uniontown (Wash.) Catholic Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fuchs, who was born in Uniontown, died Friday.

He attended schools in Uniontown and Plummer, Idaho, before entering the Army in 1942.

Mr. Fuchs served in the European Theater during World War II. He was discharged as a private first class with the 64th Air Drome Squadron on the 9th Tactical Air Command. He later continued his service with the Army in Alaska during the Korean War. He was discharged again in the early 1950s as a corporal.

In 1952 he married Dorothy Bryant Epler. They moved to Potlatch in 1953.

Mr. Fuchs worked as a pipe fitter for Potlatch Forests Inc. He worked at the Potlatch Mill until the mill closed in the 1980s.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Potlatch, the Knights of Columbus and Potlatch American Legion Post 81. He was a member and past commander of the Potlatch Post 103000 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Fuchs also served with the Potlatch Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.

His wife died in 1997.

Survivors include a stepson, Ron Epler of Potlatch; a stepdaughter, Marsha Stansell of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Sister Ida Mae Fuchs of Cottonwood, Idaho; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Potlatch Ambulance Fund.

Jeanette Apker Spokane

Graveside service for Jeanette P. Apker, 68, will be at 1 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Lewistown, Mont., Mrs. Apker died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane in 1948 and was a homemaker.

Survivors include seven sisters, Hazel Hall, Colleen Mills and Lois Voss, all of Spokane, Evelyn Nelson of Lewistown, Ethel Jennings of Great Falls, Mont., Marjorie Dailey of Hamilton, Mont., and Shirley Jennings of Kennewick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Johnson Phoenix

Memorial service for Kenneth E. Johnson, a former longtime Spokane resident, is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spokane. Best Funeral Home in Peoria, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Round Grove, Ill., died April 18. He was 80.

He worked as sales executive for a food broker in Spokane for many years.

Mr. Johnson moved to Phoenix five years ago.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jettie; two daughters, Linda Pitkonen of Mead and Sandy Richmond of Post Falls; a sister, Betty Renford of Spokane; a brother, Russell Johnson of North Aurora, Ill.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Arlene Gay Spokane

Memorial service for Arlene F. Gay, 71, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

A longtime Spokane resident, Mrs. Gay died Saturday. She was born in Milton, Mass.

She worked as a secretary for the Bear Creek Mining Co. for several years and later as a restaurant cook. She retired in 1975.

Survivors include seven children, David, Daniel, Thomas, Elizabeth, Laura, Patricia and Cheryl; and 15 grandchildren.

Nettie Dreyer Spokane

Visitation for Nettie D. Dreyer, 99, will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Dreyer, who was born in Lake Sarah, Minn., died Sunday.

She came to Spokane in 1904, moving to the Orchard Avenue area of the Spokane Valley in 1925.

Mrs. Dreyer worked at the Tru Blue Biscuit Co., Crystal Laundry and at the Granby Court Hotel.

Her husband, Harry, died in 1983.

Survivors include two daughters, Florence Hill of Post Falls and Evelyn Larsen of Spokane; four grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Lorraine Doulas Spokane

Funeral for Lorraine Doulas, 67, is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel on the grounds of Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow at the cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Doulas, who died Friday, was born in Missoula.

She was a graduate of North Central High School and a 50-year Spokane resident.

Mrs. Doulas worked in the personnel department for an insurance company for many years and was a member of the Insurance Women’s Association.

Survivors include a son, Gary Doulas, and a daughter, Janet Maxwell, both of Spokane; a sister, Eileen Newton of Medford, Ore.; and one granddaughter.
