Windham’S Header Lifts Nc

First-place North Central had a narrow escape at Mt. Spokane in Greater Spokane League boys soccer Monday.

The Indians (12-1-1 overall, 7-1 GSL) pulled out a 1-0 victory on a first-half header by Jeff Windham.

North Central keeper Brad Cushman earned the shutout, making four saves. NC was outshot 14-11.

Mt. Spokane (6-7, 4-4) had a potential goal taken away by officials late in the second half. In the 78th minute, the Wildcats headed in the ball for what appeared to be a game-tying goal, but officials ruled that Cushman was interfered with and stripped Mt. Spokane of the goal.

At Shadle Park, Ty Pfundheller supplied Jake Person with a pass that led to the Highlanders’ (8-4, 5-3) goal in a 1-0 victory over Ferris (9-4, 5-3).

At Mead Middle School, Ben Zimmerman received a crossing pass from Andy Sather that he smacked into the far side of the goal late in the second half as Central Valley (9-3, 6-2) defeated Mead (3-8, 2-6) 2-1.

At University, Jimmy Lehrman scored on a penalty kick late in the game to put Lewis and Clark (7-6, 3-5) up 4-3 over University (6-7, 4-4).

U-Hi’s Grant Falco broke the GSL record for most goals scored in a season with 29. The record of 28 was set by Mead’s Mitch Thomas in 1990. Falco scored two goals in the game.

Five Gonzaga Prep (6-7, 4-4) players scored points in a 3-0 shutout of visiting Rogers (3-11,0-8). Garrett McQuesten earned the shutout and made two saves on his return after being out the previous two games.

Yasen arrested

Corissa Yasen, one of the most high profiled athletes in Coeur d’Alene High School history, was arrested for drunken driving late Friday in Coeur d’Alene.

Yasen, 26, also was cited for leaving the scene of an accident after she drove her 1999 Toyota 4-Runner into a tree near her home about 11 p.m.

An assistant in both girls basketball and track at Lake City High School, Yasen twice blew a .15 on a blood-alcohol test, police reports show. Idaho law considers a person legally drunk at .08.

Yasen hit a tree, according to the report. She told police she struck “something” after swerving to avoid an animal.

Witnesses called police after the accident. Police were able to locate Yasen and her vehicle by following a trail of radiator fluid to her home.

Police said Yasen’s vehicle had extensive damage to the front end.
