Riverside Wins Gnl Showdown

Junior goalkeeper Logan Krohn made three saves during a shootout Tuesday as Riverside defeated visiting Pullman 3-2 in a showdown of the top Great Northern League boys soccer teams.

Riverside (10-1) outshot Pullman (9-2) 16-12.

Jason Remington scored in the first overtime for Riverside on a penalty kick. He also had an assist and converted in the shootout.

Trevor Tharp scored twice for the Greyhounds but was issued a red card for mocking the crowd after his second goal and was ejected, Riverside coach Kevin Moon said. He will have to sit out the team’s next match.

Pullman’s leading scorer, Georges Souza, sat out with a red card. So did Riverside midfielder Wink Hobson, who had marked Souza in the teams’ first meeting Thursday, a 1-0 Pullman win.

Also in the GNL, Mike Chappell scored goals 2 minutes apart in the first half, and Medical Lake (6-5) defeated visiting Chewelah 5-0 to snap a three-way tie for third place.

Jeff Wendt assisted on Chappell’s first goal and scored twice in the second half. Chewelah (5-7) is tied for fourth with idle Deer Park.

Colville (4-7) scored twice in the second half for a 3-1 win over host Lakeside (0-11) at Nine Mile Falls.

Phia Xiong had a goal and an assist 1 minute apart in the second half, and visiting East Valley (8-1-4, 4-0) beat Clarkston 6-1 to maintain first place in the Frontier League.

EV led 5-0 when Tyrel Child of the Bantams (0-9-2, 0-4), the starting goalkeeper, scored at 76 minutes.

Also in the FL, Cory Triplett and Ian Anderson scored in Cheney’s 2-0 win at West Valley (5-6-2, 1-3).

Jesse Volesky of the Blackhawks (6-7, 3-1) recorded the shutout. Tony Wacenske had two breakaway chances for WV, and Mike Shafer barely missed with a shot over the crossbar.
