Area Students Attend Summer Workshop

Area high school students recently attended the Junior Engineering, Math and Science Summer Workshop, (JEMS), sponsored by the University of Idaho College of Engineering.

Future engineering students from Idaho, Ohio, Oregon and Washington studied the principles of propulsion and trajectory with the challenge to design, build, and successfully launch a rocket. An integral part of the JEMS coursework is a design project, with the rocket launch meeting requirements of a two-credit engineering course.

Students attending the JEMS workshop included Amy Hallock of Coeur d’Alene; Jocelyn Foiles, Jamie Garlinghouse, Janna King and Matthew Petersen, all of Moscow; Jack Douglas, Mullan; Jesse Norton and Ken Packard, both Viola; and Heidi Dyer, Worley.

The University of Idaho has been listed in America’s Best College Scholarships-2000. Fewer than one in 15 colleges and universities who apply for the listing qualify.

Published annually by Institutional Research & Evaluation Inc., an independent research and consulting organization, the report lists colleges and universities providing the nation’s top merit-based scholarships. Need-based scholarships are not evaluated.

Only merit scholarships providing approximately $6,000 or more annually to local or out of state students at UI were evaluated based on eight criteria, including availability of funding to all academically qualified applicants regardless of age, race, color, religion, gender or national origin.

To be considered, awards must not be subject to residency requirements, and funding must come from private or institutional sources rather than state or federal government coffers.

Educational institutions pay no fee for the service. The UI also appeared in last year’s listing.
