Hayden Team State Champions
The Hayden 9-10 All-Stars - a baseball team of 9- and 10-year-old boys - are the state champions in their age group.
The team beat five other teams to win the North Idaho district championship, then beat a team from Meridian to win the state championship in Boise on July 30 and 31.
“The kids did real well. Each one of them performed and they supported each other,” said their coach, George Schultze. “It was a real team victory down there.”
The boys held a car wash and went before the Hayden City Council to raise money for their Boise trip. The city of Hayden responded with a $1,000 check. The championship trophy will be on display in city hall.
The team was compiled by Hayden Little League coaches at the end of the regular season by choosing the best players from each team, Schultze said.
The team members are: Bruce Amende, Leon Duplessis, Jacob Hall, Matt Pierson, Jacob Rhodes, Mike West, Tobin Broesch, Spike Gatten, Paul Maland, Alex Chadderdon, Shea Vucinich and Cory Zastrow. In addition to Schultze, the head coach, Tim Broesch and Andrew Zastrow served as assistant coaches.
