Parents at McFarland Junior High are being careful about their back-to-school shopping. After considering, then rejecting, uniforms, administrators tightened the dress code. Pants with frayed hems or holes may only be worn when mended, and clothing must fit, prohibiting baggy clothes. All midriffs must be covered. Shorts and skirts cannot be shorter than the length of a student’s arm when held at their side.

Mike Nee, the county building inspector, says he’ll step up operations to find landowners who aren’t in compliance with the permit process. He says land owners making improvements without a proper permit are sent a letter of warning. Those making improvements without a permit can be prosecuted. The county assessor’s office recently found several properties out of compliance.

Tiffany Moncrief, 12, has finally broken the gender barrier in Ephrata Bambino Baseball. She is the first girl ever selected to the local Bambino league All-Star team. Her coach, Joe Sonnabend, says she’s got a strong arm and plays defense well. Moncrief credits her ability and enthusiasm to growing up an Ephrata Tiger/Columbia Basin Riverdogs fan.

Local residents off traveling often take their town’s travel and tourism magazine, “This is Odessa,” with them to distribute. Marlene Homberg recently dropped copies off in Ellensburg, Cle Elum and beyond on a trip to the Pacific Coast. Anyone taking a post-harvest trip is asked to spread the word about this rural wheat town.

Pend Oreille Telephone Co. officials are looking into burying fiber optic lines throughout the Sullivan Lake Ranger District. The company says the new lines would be laid next to existing copper cables. The lines could be buried 48 inches deep along the LeClerc and Box Canyon Road right of ways. The Spokane Regional Health District and Caritas Center will be providing back-to-school immunizations to north Spokane-area families on Aug. 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at 5109 N. Adams. Immunizations offered for children are polio, DTAP, MMR and hepatitis B. Tetanus and hepatitis B updates for adults are available. Cost is based on family size and income. Those interested in agriculture are invited to two small-farm tours, sponsored by WSU Cooperative Extension. Pasture management and weed control will be discussed on the Smiley Farm Tour. That exposition takes place Saturday, 6.5 miles north of Barstow. A tour of the China Bend Vineyards and organic gardens is Sept. 19. Wine and food tasting is included.

Erik Lamb, a 1999 graduate of Pullman High School, has been selected to represent Washington at the National Youth Science Camp this summer. He joined 104 delegates from all 50 states and five foreign countries for the prestigious four-week program. Lam participated in a directed study on lasers and holograms.

The Bank of Latah has not hired a manager for its St. Maries branch. Former manager Mike McKeon left the bank in July. Bank President John Gilbert and other officers of the bank will handle managerial duties until a manager is hired.

The Bonners Ferry Seniors Hospitality Center operates 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center serves meals Monday through Wednesday and Friday at noon. Home-delivered meals are available. The Latah County Historical Society and Appaloosa Museum will sponsor a history fair and ice cream social Aug. 29. The fair will include hands-on historical activities, vintage dress-up clothes, traditional crafts, story tellers, horses and wagons, tours of the McConnell Mansion, live music and fruit parfaits with Hog Heaven ice cream. Panhandle Health District will offer free diagnostic blood tests for children ages 6 months to 9 years through Wednesday at Silver Hills Middle School in Osburn.
Screenings will also be offered to pregnant women who live near the Coeur d’Alene River from Mullan to the Cave Lake area. Screenings will be available without appointment from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

St. John’s Lutheran Hospital will offer a month-long childbearing class beginning Sept. 1. The class will focus on choices in childbirth, prenatal care, nutrition, relaxation and breathing, emotional and spiritual preparation, newborn care, postpartum and labor tools.
