Council Member Resigns

Airway Heights City Council member Debra Harmon has traded her part-time civic duties for a fulltime job at City Hall.

Harmon last month resigned her council seat to take a job as the clerk of utilities for Airway Heights.

City Administrator Gordon Howell said he chose Harmon because she was the most qualified out of more than two dozen applicants for the job.

She had served as a council appointee for the past 18 months and had filed for election to a regular council term this fall.

Her selection to a full-time job caused her to submit her resignation, but her name will still appear on the primary election ballot, Howell said.

Voters will have a choice between two other candidates. Larry Haskell and Timmy R. Noon also filed for the Position 1 seat being vacated by Harmon.

The Airway Heights City Council will have the option of appointing a successor to serve until this fall’s election results are final.

The question of replacing Harmon is expected to come up at the Aug. 30 council meeting. Applications and resumes are being accepted by the council, Howell said.

Harmon was appointed to the council in January 1998 to fill the seat vacated by Brian Grady following his election as mayor in November 1997.
