Div. I Independent

Lewiston Bengals

1998 record: 7-3

Coach: Emmett Dougherty

Years coaching, record: 3rd, 1st at Lewiston, 13-8

Top returners: Mike Rogers, senior, 5-10, 175, wide receiver/defensive back; Neil Litchfield, junior, 6-2, 185, quarterback; Coleby Thorpe, sr., 6-0, 200, defensive end; Luke Gordon, sr., 5-9, 155, tailback; Mike Anderson, jr., 6-3, 190, wr/db; Brandon Whitlock, jr., 5-10, 190, linebacker.

Top newcomers: Mike Gower, jr., 5-10, 175, lb/running back; Matt Gower, jr., 5-10, 175, db/wr; Jim Schmidt, jr., 5-10, 180, fullback/lb.

Coach’s comment: “I’m excited about our skill kids. That’s definitely where the cupboard isn’t bare.”

Outlook: Lewiston, by itself as a Division I independent in North Idaho, had to drop a couple of games with Inland Empire League teams to add more Boise-area opponents. Dougherty takes over a highly successful program from Nick Menegas. The Bengals should continue their winning tradition.
