Ridings Cool For Shadle

If you can make free throws in practice, there’s no reason not to make them in a game. After all, no one is guarding you in either instance.

That’s the way Amy Ridings sees it.

Ridings calmly hit four free throws in the final 38 seconds to lift Shadle Park to a 57-53 win over Gonzaga Prep Tuesday night at Shadle.

“I do it a lot of times a day, there’s no pressure,” Ridings said. “I just think about my rhythm, follow through and focus on the basket.”

Her first two free throws put the Highlanders ahead 54-53. The last two, with 16 seconds left, clinched it.

The Highlanders have won four of their last five Greater Spokane League games while Prep has lost four of five after opening the season with 10 straight wins.

Almost every game for Prep is a barn burner and features one team coming back on the other. This time it was Shadle coming from 10 down in the third quarter.

“That’s been a characteristic of our team, get leads and we can’t maintain them or come from behind,” Prep coach Mike Arte said. “We don’t have a killer instinct. It might be our youth, I don’t know what it is. I can’t put a finger on it but we’ve done it a lot of times.”

This time it was fouls. Prep had 26, sending the Highlanders to the line 40 times, good for 24 points. Prep was just 8 of 18.

Among those saddled with foul trouble was leading scorer Juliann Laney. Also, point guard Sarah O’Brien hurt her back near the end of the third quarter. That didn’t help Prep’s ballhanding, which contributed to 21 turnovers.

Rochelle Stockman fed Adrienne Peterson for a basket and Ridings hit a 3-pointer just before the end of the third quarter to cut Prep’s lead to 40-36.

The eighth-ranked Bears put three players in double figures and survived a last-second 3-point attempt to defeat the Tigers at LC.

Sarah Travis had a career high 14 points for LC and grabbed 14 rebounds, nine offensive.

The Panthers opened with a 10-2 run and closed with a 13-4 run to defeat the visiting Titans.

Morgan Bennett had 22 points and seven rebounds and Courtney Ferguson hit four of six 3’s for 12 points.
