David Beegle Spokane
Funeral for David Matthew Beegle, 19, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Beegle, who was born in Portsmouth, Va., died Saturday in an avalanche while snowboarding in the Blue Mountains of Northeast Oregon.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1997, where he participated in honors and advanced placement courses. He also ran track and cross country, and was elected captain of both teams his senior year.
Beegle enjoyed the outdoors, spending his time running, backcountry hiking and working as a summer camp counselor at Camp Cross. He spent the past two summers as a lifeguard at Camp Sweyolaken.
He was a sophomore at Whitman College in Walla Walla, where he was pursuing a degree in environmental studies and politics with a minor in geology.
Mr. Beegle was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was a disc jockey at KWCW, the college’s radio station.
He was a member of Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, and was involved with its youth group and was an altar server.
Survivors include his parents, Nina Finch Beegle and Michael Beegle, both of Spokane; a brother, Michael Beegle at home; his grandparents, Frank and Clairinda Finch of Sierra Madre, Calif., and Calvin and Doris Beegle of Duncansville, Pa.

James Cook Spokane
Funeral for James A. Cook, 71, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Cook died Tuesday.
He served with the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Cook worked as a railroad switchman for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 35 years.
In 1983 he married his wife, Judi.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge 3564 in Deer Park and the Hillyard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jim and Richard Cook, and Greg Deerheim; six daughters, Judy Boyer, Cheryl Jurey, Lori Oien, Terri, Carmen and Patty Deerheim; a brother, Chuck Cook of Deer Park; and 15 grandchildren.

Clarence Harty Spokane
Funeral for Clarence Harty, 89, will be at 11 a.m. today in the Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Harty died Tuesday.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Spokane County Roads Department for many years.
Mr. Harty is survived by a son, Ray Harty of Spokane; five daughters, Lucille Gregerson and Erna Shaw, both of Spokane, Marjorie Thompson of Oregon, Marian Kirkland of the Seattle area and Ginger of Idaho; two brothers, Clifton Lyle and Floyd Harty, both of Spokane; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Raymond Owen Spokane
Memorial service for Raymond K. Owen, 66, will be at 4 p.m. today at the Cremation Society of Washington.
Mr. Owen, who was born and raised in Spokane, died Wednesday.
He graduated from Rogers High School in 1950 and later retired from Darigold.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carolyn; a daughter, Gail Sattler of Spokane; two sons, Roy and James Owen, both of Spokane; a brother, Kenneth Owen of Spokane; a sister, Janine Pounds of Pasco; and six grandchildren.

Albert Gaber Deer Park
Rosary for Albert James Gaber, 81, will be at 6:30 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church in Deer Park. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Holy Redeemer-Kelly Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gaber, who was born in near Deer Park, died Monday.
He served as a military policeman and in the infantry in the Army in the North African and European Theaters participating in the invasion of Normandy.
Mr. Gaber worked as a potliner for Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works, for 28 years.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church in Deer Park, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clayton, Wash., the National Rifle Association, United Steelworkers of America Local 329 and the Gardenspot Grange.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Gaber of Deer Park; a daughter, Judy Ovenell of George, Wash.; a brother, Walter Gaber of Deer Lake; and four grandchildren.

Hazel Bolser Spokane
Visitation for Hazel M. Bolser, 86, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be at Pines Cemetery.
Born in Ione, Wash., Mrs. Bolser died Monday.
She worked as a secretary for New York Life Insurance Co. for many years before retiring in 1977.
Her first husband, Don Reeder, died in 1965. She later married Clarence Bolser, who died in 1982.
Survivors include a son, John Reeder of Auburn, Wash.; a daughter, Virginia Rogers of Marysville, Wash.; three stepchildren, Claudia Broderson of Woodinville, Wash., Kurt Bolser of McKinley, Texas, and Kathy Farr of Sumner, Wash.; two sisters, Sarah Graham of Colbert and Neva Huber of Las Vegas; two brothers, Howard Mansfield of Spokane and John Mansfield of Sequim, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.
Sophronia `Frone’ Hoefel Ritzville, Wash.
Visitation for Sophronia “Frone” Hoefel, 90, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Ritzville. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Philadelphia Congregational Church in Ritzville. Burial will be at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Hoefel, who died Wednesday, was born in Ritzville.
She graduated from Ritzville High School in 1926 and worked for J.C. Penney in Ritzville for six years.
She married Jard Harris in 1932. He died in 1952.
In 1957 she married Carl Hoefel.
Mrs. Hoefel worked as a bank teller at the National Bank of Commerce in Ritzville before retiring in 1969.
Mrs. Hoefel was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational Church and the Ritzville Ladies Golf Association.
Her husband died in 1992.
Survivors include a son, Jesse Harris of Bartlesville, Okla.; and two granddaughters.
Dale Hines Spokane
No service will be held for Dale M. Hines, 73, at his request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
A 68-year Spokane resident, Mr. Hines died Tuesday. He was born in Payette, Idaho.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1943 and served as a corporal at Army department headquarters in the European theater during World War II.
Mr. Hines began working as a letter carrier for the Postal Service shortly after his discharge from the military in 1946. He retired in 1970. He also served in the Army reserves for several years.
He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and First Presbyterian and Manito Presbyterian churches.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jacqualine; and a sister, Ardis McKibben of Redmond, Wash.
Roberta `Bobbie’ Peacock Spokane
Memorial service for Roberta “Bobbie” (Shanks) Peacock, 85, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Congregational Church. Private family burial was held at Greenwood Memorial Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Peacock, who was born in Spokane, died Jan. 30.
She graduated from North Central High School and attended Whitman College in Walla Walla. She graduated with a degree in biology from the University of Washington.
Mrs. Peacock was known for her presentations about Wildflowers in the Spokane area of the Pacific Northwest.
She married Eldred Peacock in 1936. He died in 1996.
Mrs. Peacock was a member of Westminster Congregational Church, the Spokane County Medical Auxiliary, which she served as president from 1946 to 1947, the Mayflower Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cannon Hill Garden Club, which she served as president, a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Golden Circle Alumni and a 50-year member of the Spokane Country Club.
Survivors include a son, John Peacock of Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Frances Lauer of San Diego and Marjorie Whitten of Spokane; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Memorial contribution may be made to the Women’s Fellowship at Westminster Congregational Church or Hospice of Spokane.
Marlin Monson Spokane
Burial for Marlin Monson, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Chapel at Riverview Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Monson, who died Tuesday, was born in Gardner, N.D.
He moved with his family to a farm outside of Perley, Minn., before enlisting in the Army Air Corps the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Monson served for more than three years in the China, Burma and India Theater during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star.
In 1946 he married Maire Zimmermann, and they moved to Spokane, where he worked as a carpenter and later formed his own contracting business, building custom homes.
Mr. Monson served on the Cheney school board, was a member of the Garden Springs Community and Plymouth Congregational Church, where he served on the board of trustees.
He retired from the contracting business in 1980 and spent winters in Arizona.
Mr. Monson moved into the Riverview Terrace Retirement Community two years ago.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Roger Monson of Seattle; a daughter, Shirley Hood of Ellensburg; and four grandsons.

Herbert Freeman Spokane
Memorial service for Herbert Freeman, 89, is planned for 4 p.m. Saturday at the South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 13-year Spokane resident, Mr. Herbert died Tuesday. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta.
He moved to Walla Walla with his family at a young age, before moving to Brewster, Wash., and later to Spokane.
Mr. Freeman worked as a mule skinner, wrangling and driving a 32-mule team in the wheat fields of the Palouse and Walla Walla Valley, later becoming a wheat rancher and strawberry farmer. He also was a pilot, a horse trainer and rodeo announcer.
Mr. Freeman served as vice president of the Washington State Horseman’s Association and the Brewster Bridle Club. He was a member of South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church in Spokane Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Leola; six children, Barbara Smith and Margie Lunt, both of Spokane, Terri Trees of Cheney, Beverly Schutter of Auburn, Wash., Mike Freeman of Lake Stevens, Wash., and Charla Appel of Billings, Mont.; 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Denise Durham Spokane

A lifetime Spokane resident, Miss Durham died Sunday.
She graduated from North Central High School in 1975 and attended Spokane Community College.
Miss Durham worked as a secretary, including working for the Head Start Program early in her career.
Survivors include her parents, William and Lodema Durham of Spokane; and a brother, Paul Durham of Larkspur, Colo.

Gregory Herrick Spokane
Funeral for Gregory J. Herrick, 55, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spangle (Wash.) City Cemetery.
Mr. Herrick, who was born in Buffalo, N.Y., died Wednesday.
He graduated from high school and attended San Jose (Calif.) State University for a year before enlisting in the Navy. He served as a Navy Seal for three years during the Vietnam War.
In 1972 he married Janet Konshuk, and they lived in Spokane, where he worked in the airline industry for 15 years. He also owned and operated Advanced Laser Technologies of Spokane.
Mr. Herrick was a member of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brandon and Chadwick, both at home; and four brothers and sisters.
Norman Harold Greenacres
Memorial service for Harold J. Norman, 55, is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A resident of Greenacres since 1946, Mr. Harold died Tuesday. He was born in Spokane.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Valley Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Lizabelle; and a son, Jason Harold of Greenacres.
Edith Smith Tofield, Alberta
Funeral for Edith Lillian Smith, 88, was Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Entombment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Born in Montreal, Mrs. Smith, died Jan. 26.
She moved to Spokane in 1931 and worked as a practical nurse, including running several funeral homes. She retired in 1991.
In 1992, Mrs. Smith returned to Canada.
She is survived by a nephew, Shannon Riley of Ontario.
Stanley Symms Spokane
Memorial service for Stanley H. Symms, a longtime Spokane resident, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Veradale. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Symms, who was born in Starbuck, Wash., died Tuesday. He was 85.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and in 1924, began working as an engineer for the railroad.
In 1940 he married Ruth Stalwick. He retired from the railroad in 1977.
Mr. Symms was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Richard Symms of Issaquah, Wash., Stephen Symms of Seattle and Kenneth Symms of Valley Forge, Pa.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Max Lukasik Deer Park
No service will be held for Max Lukasik, 86. Burial will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 27-year Deer Park resident, Mr. Lukasik died Friday. He was born in Moulton, Texas.
He served with the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Lukasik worked in the chemical industry and also was a tool maker.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Kay; and a brother, Louis Lukasik of Denver.
