Writers Guild Nominees Named
In a move that foreshadows the Academy Awards for best screenplay, the Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for its 51st annual awards.
In the category of best screenplay written directly for the screen, the nominees are: Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard for “Shakespeare in Love”; Warren Beatty and Jeremy Pikser, “Bulworth”; Don Roos, “The Opposite of Sex”; Robert Rodat, “Saving Private Ryan”; and Andrew Niccol, “The Truman Show.”
In the category of best screenplay based on material previously produced or published, the nominees are Bill Condon for “Gods and Monsters,” based on the novel “Father of Frankenstein” by Christopher Bram; Steven Zaillian for “A Civil Action,” based on the book by Jonathan Harr; Scott Frank for “Out of Sight,” based on the novel by Elmore Leonard; Elaine May for “Primary Colors,” based on the novel by Anonymous; and Scott B. Smith who adapted “A Simple Plan” from his own novel.
Winners will be announced Feb. 20.
