Spokane Boxers Win Golden Gloves

Mahlon Cerwick and Annette Nevills of Spokane were among the individual winners Sunday when the Washington Golden Gloves Boxing Championships ended.

Cerwick walked away with the Golden Boy trophy awarded to the tournament’s best boxer. He took a 3-2 decision from Gabriel Flores of Othello in the 132-pound title bout.

A senior at University High School, Cerwick, who represents the Lilac Boxing Club, previously received an at-large berth in the U.S. Boxing Championships in March.

Nevills earned the women’s 156-pound title by outpointing Adrian Lugg of Seattle 5-0.

Two other Spokane fighters competed in men’s championship finals.

Angelo Torres of Tacoma decisioned Rob Dorman 5-0 at 125 pounds. Walter Wright, Seattle, defeated Dewey Welliver 4-1 at 147.

All three Spokane men are booked for a regional tournament this weekend at Portland.
