Republic Takes Its Opener

Girls basketball

Even Republic isn’t certain how much time has elapsed since it won an opening-round game at the Panorama League girls basketball tournament.

The Tigers’ best estimate is at least 12 years, but that’s old news after their 51-45 win over visiting Selkirk inaugurated the league tourney Tuesday.

Lucy Wilson had nine rebounds and Breeann Osgood made 4 of 4 free-throw attempts in the late stages as the Tigers, the No. 2-seeded team from the North Division, advanced to Friday’s tourney semifinal at South champion St. George’s.

Selkirk, the defending league-tourney champ, rallied in the second half behind Rachea Allert’s 14 points. But the Rangers fell back after pulling within two points with 4 minutes left.

The tourney continues Friday with Wellpinit at Selkirk and Springdale at Columbia in loser-out games, and Northwest Christian at Northport in the other semifinal.
