Join Jazz Orchestra For Swinging Good Time

William Berry Correspondent

(From For the Record, February 12, 1999): Price wrong: Tickets to the Spokane Jazz Orchestra’s Valentine dance at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Temple are $15 in advance. The price was incorrect in a Thursday IN Life story and in today’s Weekend listings.

The Spokane Jazz Orchestra will present “Swing Your Valentine” Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Masonic Temple Auditorium, 1108 W. Riverside.

Of all the musical events lined up for Valentine’s weekend, here is one that encourages full-body contact. You can swing dance Saturday night away with your sweetheart to the live tunes of the best big band in the city, the Spokane Jazz Orchestra.

The orchestra is taking the stage at the Masonic Temple, where the dance floor is spring-loaded to put that extra bounce in your step.

They will be playing the hits of the World War II years. The bands of Miller, Dorsey, Basie, Goodman, Ellington and James come immediately to mind, but the list goes on.

The SJO has lined up some classics for the 18-piece swing band and are bringing in vocalist Cheryl Hodge from Canada to do the “torch” singing.

Since bandleader Dan Keberle is away, trombonist Dave Stultz, an experienced bandleader in his own right, will lead the group.

Bruce Davis, who hosts KPBX’s Friday night big band show, and Art Sanders, from KKPL-AM 630, will share duties as masters of ceremonies at the event.
