Snow Sport Report

Alpine skiing/snowboarding Event No. 2 in the Inland Northwest Ski Association’s “Five Mountains, Five Challenges” series for skiers and snowboarders, ages 11-17, will be held Saturday at 49 Degrees North.

49 Degrees North is also accepting applications for its Ski Patrol for the 1999-2000 season. Applicants must be 15 years of age or older and an advanced level skier, telemarker, or snowboarder. Applications may be picked up from the patrol director in the patrol room or in the ticket office. The final date to turn in applications is Feb. 19.

Mt. Spokane, normally not open on Mondays, will be open this Monday for the Presidents’ Day holiday.

The Spirit of Winter Ski Demo show will be held at The Big Mountain in Whitefish, Mont., on Saturday.

Nordic skiing

The Big Mountain is reporting that all trails are tilled and groomed for classic and skate style. Night skiing also is available.

The Schweitzer Mountain Resort trail system was recently groomed and the resort reports excellent conditions.

Avalanche watch

The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Service is warning of considerable avalanche danger below 7,000 feet in the backcountry areas of the Washington Cascades and the Olympics. For more information: (206) 526-6677.
