2 Dozen Mule Deer Killed By Avalanches
Dangerous mountain conditions near Hailey have caused at least one slide that has killed as many as two dozen mule deer.
Eyewitnesses accounted for a herd of 57 deer on Della Mountain before the avalanches struck Tuesday. Just 28 deer remained on the mountainside after the avalanches.
Eyewitness also said another five deer actually rode the slide down the mountain and walked away, said Carl Nellis, regional supervisor for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
City crews and residents saw deer lose their footing on slick snow and roll to their deaths on Wednesday and Thursday. The icy layer that caused the slide is now exposed and is dangerous even for sure-footed deer, said Doug Abromeit, director of the U.S. Forest Service’s National Avalanche Center.
