Ash Wednesday Services Planned
Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of Lent, is approaching and many Valley churches are preparing special services.
Some of the upcoming services are listed below:
Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will celebrate Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, with a pancake supper from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will also include a dessert auction.
The cost is $3 per person and $8 for a family of four with $3 for each additional family member.
Proceeds will benefit various mission projects.
On Ash Wednesday silent communion will be available from 4 to 7:15 p.m. Worshipers may come and meditate, pray and receive communion. A service begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Veradale United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress Road, will have its service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The church will also have a Valentine’s Day potluck at noon on Sunday. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a hot dish or salad to share as well as a dessert to sell at the Sweets Sale following the meal.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the church’s general fund.
Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2511 S. Pines Road, will have a 7 p.m. worship service on Wednesday.
The youth of the church will also serve a spaghetti dinner at the church at 5 p.m. Sunday. The suggested donation is $5 per person or $15 per family.
Proceeds will be used to send young people to summer camp.
An Ash Wednesday service begins at 7 p.m. at Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines.
The church will also have its annual book sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Free coffee will be available all day. All-you-can-eat soup and chili and bread will be available for $3.50 after 10 a.m.
Items available for purchase include novels, textbooks, children’s books, videos, CD’s, computer software, board games and puzzles.
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 810 S. Sullivan Road, will have a 7 p.m. worship service on Wednesday. The service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m.
Christ Lutheran Church, 13009 E. Broadway, will have its Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.
Opportunity Christian potluck
Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines, will have a potluck lunch following the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday.
The guest speaker will be Lillian Moir, the communications officers for the Council of Churches in Namibia.
Those planning to attend are asked to bring a main dish and a dessert or salad.
