Lakeside Captures 1-Vs.-2 Showdown

Lakeside’s kiddie corps placed Newport’s unbeaten record and No. 1 ranking in jeopardy on Saturday.

But it was Lakeside’s lone senior, Nikki Petticrew, who pushed Newport over the brink.

Petticrew scored 12 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, and added 14 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals as the Class 2A second-ranked Eagles toppled the top-ranked Grizzlies 77-64 in a Great Northern League game before a packed house.

Petticrew scored seven points in 70 seconds to highlight a 9-0 run that gave the Eagles a 69-55 lead with 4:44 left.

“Nikki really felt confident going into tonight,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz. “She was really in a zone, shooting 3-pointers, baseline jumpers and double-pump runners.”

Newport defeated Lakeside 82-68 at Newport on Jan. 22, the only time in 42 games that the defending State 2A champions had taken a tumble. Lakeside has won four consecutive league titles and now is in position to tie Newport for the 1998-99 crown.

Lakeside’s season has been hampered by season-ending injuries to three players who figured in Schultz’s top six. So Petticrew and junior point guard Julia Vojtech, who has been slowed by a shoulder injury, have brought along a stable of promising youths.

Sophomore Jenna Giampietri struck the first blow against Newport Saturday, scoring nine points during a 13-0 run for a 21-9 lead just seconds into the second quarter. Giampietri’s 3-pointer with 2:42 left in the first quarter had put Lakeside ahead for good.

Freshman Jen Barcus then took the baton, scoring 10 of her 23 points for the Eagles during the third quarter when Newport started to rally. The Grizzlies trimmed the deficit to 46-43 midway through the quarter, but Eagles freshman reserve Molly Stillar hit three quick baskets to push the lead to nine.

“When you have this many injuries you can have a drop in morale,” Schultz said. “But I’m most proud of the kids who have taken over the roles of the starters.”

Newport’s final flurry, in the fourth quarter, faded when Petticrew took charge and Grizzlies senior star Carey Sauer fouled out.

Sauer, who scored 22 points including 9-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line, drew foul No. 3 on Petticrew early in the third quarter. But Petticrew didn’t commit another foul and Sauer was gone midway through the fourth quarter.

“I had to hold back a little because I knew I couldn’t foul out,” Petticrew said.

Newport’s Mary Lindburg hit 8 of 15 from the floor and 5 of 5 from the line for 22 points.

“Ever since the Newport loss, the kids have been focusing on playing at a higher level,” Schultz said. “Nikki and Julia taught them well.”

Mandi Walters scored 23 of her career-high 34 points in the second half as the ninth-ranked Falcons defeated the sixth-ranked Wildcats in a tiebreaker at Davenport to earn the No. 2 seed to the league tourney and an automatic berth to the District 7 tourney.

Walters added seven rebounds, six steals, and a basket in the final minute for a three-point lead. Her previous career high was 29, set last season. The Falcons play No. 1 Ritzville (19-1) Friday at Reardan for the top two seeds to district.

Alyssa Erickson had 21 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out for the Wildcats, who had a 13-game winning streak snapped. W-C plays No. 6 Almira/CouleeHartline (9-11) to open the league tourney Tuesday.

Tiffany Pittman totaled 25 points and 17 rebounds to guide the league-champion Bulldogs over visiting Kettle Falls in the final game of the regular season.

Jessica Rohner added eight rebounds and Emily Hall had seven assists for Colfax. Leslie Fredrickson of Kettle Falls hit 7 of 16 from the field.

The District 7 1A tournament opens Friday at Mead High with No. 1 Colfax vs. No. 4 Reardan (2-15) and No. 3 KF vs. No. 2 Freeman (7-13).
