‘Silk Stalkings’ Run Ends
Cable’s longest-running original drama series, “Silk Stalkings,” has come to the end of its thread.
After eight years, USA is not renewing the Sunday night series, saying “it was just time to move on.”
The series, which according to Nielsen was watched on average in 1,603,000 homes last month, focused on a detective team in Palm Beach, Fla. Generally, they solved crimes of passion.
The show’s viewership peaked at an average 2,234,000 homes in the fourth quarter of 1995, the last shows for original cast members Rob Estes and Mitzi Kapture as the detective duo. Ratings began to slip in early 1996 when Estes and Kapture were replaced by Nick Kokotakis and Tyler Layton. Current stars Chris Potter and Janet Gunn took over in fall 1996.
“Silk Stalkings,” which will close with a two-hour special the night of April 18, was launched as a co-production of USA and CBS in 1991. The series was introduced to broadcast audiences in CBS’ latenight “Crime Time after Prime Time” block concurrently with its cable debut on USA.
