Obituaries

Doris Johnson Spokane

Funeral for Doris M. Johnson, 84, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow at the park. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 58-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Johnson died Monday. She was born in Wynot, Neb.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway and a lifetime member of Eagles Lodge No. 2 Auxiliary.

Her husband, Ingward, died in 1963.

Survivors include a son, Lowell Johnson of Spokane; a sister, Daisy Bottolfson of Nebraska; two brothers, Richard and Howard Mathers, both of Nebraska; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Robert Rosman Creston, Wash.

Rosary for Robert Rosman, 75, will be at 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilbur, Wash. Funeral Mass is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur is in charge of arrangements.

A longtime Creston-area farmer, Mr. Rosman died Monday. He was born in Spokane.

Mr. Rosman married his wife, Dorothy, in 1948. He retired from farming several years ago.

He was a member of Scared Heart Parish in Wilbur, Knights of Columbus and the Wilbur Lions Club. Mr. Rosman also served as a Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Chris Rosman of Coos Bay, Ore., Bob Rosman of Spokane and Fred Rosman of Creston; two daughters, Kathy Rosman of Creston and Mary Rosman of Newman Lake; a brother, Eugene Rosman of Creston; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may by made to the Wilbur Boy Scouts; Men of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilbur or the Wilbur Fire Department.

Grant Genske Post Falls

Visitation for Grant H. Genske, 74, will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Genske, who was born in Gambrills, Md., died Monday.

He lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma and then Indiana, where he graduated from high school in 1942.

Mr. Genske served with the Navy in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Bataan during World War II. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Iowa.

He worked for Beneficial Management Corp. for more than 30 years, retiring as director and vice president in 1981.

Mr. Genske moved to Post Falls in 1992 and was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include his wife of more than 52 years, Noreen; two sons, Mike Genske of Coeur d’Alene and Tim Genske of California; a daughter, Caryl Kaelin of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Bonnie Pace Coolin, Idaho

Vigil for Bonnie Jean Pace, 64, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Peter Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 45-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Pace died Monday. She was born in Indianapolis.

She worked as a computer operations manager in the banking industry.

Mrs. Pace was a volunteer with Gonzaga Prep and the March of Dimes for many years. She also was a member of St. Peter Parish and the American Institute of Banking.

She moved to Coolin a year ago.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Nathaniel; seven sons, Jerome, Paul, Patrick, Joseph and Michael Pace, all of Spokane, John Pace of Benton City, Wash., and Christopher Pace of Auburn, Wash.; six daughters, Suzanne Ellis, Pamela Thomason, Mary Haugen, Michelle Marsh, all of Spokane, Lucia Pace of Texas, and Victoria Russell of Graham, Wash.; two sisters, Patricia Gruesser of Indianapolis and Francis Gruesser of Middletown, Ohio; 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Larson Spokane

Memorial service for Robert E. “Bob” Larson, 57, will be at 11 a.m. today at Rathdrum (Idaho) United Methodist Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Larson, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

He graduated from North Central High School and attended Pacific Lutheran University.

Mr. Larson worked as a grocery manager in Tacoma for several years before returning to Spokane.

Survivors include a daughter, Jill O’Connor of Otis Orchards; a son, Jim Larson of Seattle; two sisters, Patsy Toohey of Cheney and Marilyn Hubbell of Spokane; and one grandchild.

Thomas Woodman Spokane

Funeral Mass for Thomas L. Woodman, 77, will be at noon today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Woodman died Monday.

He worked as a manager at Western Electric for several years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and St. Thomas More Parish.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Roberta; two sons, Gregory Woodman of Seattle and Paul Woodman of Renton, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Katherine Fish Spokane

Visitation for Katherine Fish, 83, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Fish, who was born in Dickinson, N.D., died Sunday.

She married Roy Fish in 1922, and they moved to Spokane in 1945.

Mrs. Fish worked as a housekeeper.

Her husband preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, James Fish of Shasta Valley, Calif., and Donald Fish of Dale City, Va.; two daughters, Audrey Contabile and Angela Bingle, both of Spokane; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Harlan Walker Sandpoint

A memorial celebration for Harlan Powers Walker, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sandpoint First Presbyterian Church. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Powers, who was born in Clarinda, Iowa, died Sunday.

He grew up and graduated from high school and junior college in Iowa, and went on to graduate from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Walker was a licensed embalmer in Iowa and worked for Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Des Moines for 11 years.

He served with the Navy during World War II and was stationed at the Seattle Naval Hospital after attending boot camp at Farragut Naval Station. He later transferred to Oregon and worked as a pharmacist’s mate and surgical technician.

Mr. Walker moved to Sandpoint after World War II and operated the Talache Lodge.

He later owned a custom cabinetry and building supply store in Sandpoint, before retiring in 1979 then traveling in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Mr. Walker was past president of the Isaac Walton League in Des Moines, participated in Boy Scouts in Iowa and Seattle and was active in Bonner County 4-H clubs.

He was past master of the Sandpoint Lakeside Masonic Lodge No. 42, served as worthy patron of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club and Sandpoint Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and sang in the choir.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret; four sons, Gordon and Dennis Walker, both of Seattle, Gregory Walker of California and Steven Walker of Colorado; and a sister, Ruth Anderson of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sandpoint Presbyterian Church or Bonner Community Hospice.

Robert Greene Spokane

Memorial service for Robert T. Greene, 87, will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at South Hill Bible Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Indianapolis, Mr. Greene died Saturday.

He grew up in Vermillion, S.D., and graduated from the University of South Dakota before doing his graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Colorado.

Mr. Greene served as a captain with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, where he served in five theaters of action in Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After his discharge in 1946, he moved to Spokane and entered the insurance and pension business. He became a chartered life underwriter in 1951 and founded Greene Co. Services, Inc., in 1969.

Mr. Greene was a charter member of the Downtown Exchange Club, where he served as president and secretary for 25 years. He was involved in several other civic activities, including serving as president of Junior Achievement, a 15-year committee member of Boy Scout Troop 353, vice president of the Western Division of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Big Brothers and Sisters, a five-year board member of the Washington State Community College District 17, president of the Washington State Community College Foundation and a four-year board member and a three-year member of the state board for Washington State Community Colleges.

Mr. Greene also was a member of the Spokane Club, Manito Golf and County Club, the Development Fund at Sacred Heart Medical Center, the Spokane Estate Planning Council and Manito Presbyterian Church.

He also served in several political capacities, including president of the Spokane County Republican Club, county chairman of the Republican Party, a delegate to the National Republican Convention and was a Republican Finance and Precinct committeeman for 12 years.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy; four sons, Thomas, Jon and Robert Greene Jr., all of Spokane, and James Greene of Seattle; two daughters, Jonny Guenther of Spokane and Marijean of San Francisco; a brother, John Greene of Storrs, Conn.; and 12 grandchildren.

Raymond Youngman Spokane

Vigil for Raymond Youngman, 74, will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Youngman, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Sunday.

He attended schools in Tekoa, Farmington, Wash., and Pullman before serving aboard the USS Endicott and the USS Ira Jeffries in the Navy during World War II.

After his discharge in 1946, he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad for a short time. He married Mayme Sullivan that same year.

Mr. Youngman then began working as a truck driver for United Truck Lines out of Spokane. In 1963 be became operations manager and moved to Omaha, Neb. He was transferred to Chicago as a division manager and six years later to Denver, where he was promoted to vice president of line haul. He was transferred to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he lived until 1976, when he returned to Spokane and began working for Consolidated Freightways. He took part-time retirement in 1991.

His wife became ill in 1993 and he retired completely to take care of her. She died in 1995.

Mr. Youngman was a member of Assumption Parish, where he was active with the Retired Men’s Association, was a longtime member of the Independent Order of Foresters and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include six sons, David, John, Tom, Steve, and Greg Youngman, all of Spokane, and Ray Youngman of Downers Grove, Ill.; a daughter, Judy Serna of Seattle; and four sisters, two brothers, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association or the Visiting Nurse Association.

Terrence Riley Spokane

Vigil for Terrence J. “Ted” Riley, 66, will be at 5 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Riley died Monday.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep, attended Seattle University and served in the Naval Reserve before enlisting in the Air Force in 1954. He served on active duty as a navigator for 20 years.

After his retirement from the military he became a Realtor, earning several honors in the profession during his 22-year career.

He was past director of the Lilac Festival Association, a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Limerick Sister City and the Spokane Elks Club. Mr. Riley also was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, where he served on the parish council and the South Side school board.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; two daughters, Erin Riley of San Francisco and Melanie Riley of Portland; two stepsons, Jeff and Brad Norton of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Norton of Sandpoint; two brothers, Tom Riley of Spokane and Peter Riley of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Dorothy Riley-Eckert of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Lorinda Colby Spokane

Funeral for Lorinda J. “Linda” Colby will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Colby, who was born in Spokane, died Friday. She was 78.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and the University of Idaho.

Mrs. Colby worked as a cosmetologist at Nordstrom in Spokane for 10 years.

Her husband, Anthony, died in 1963.

She is survived by a son, Timothy Colby of Kent, Wash.

Sr. Mary Joan Devereaux, S.N.J.M. Spokane

Funeral Mass for Sister Mary Joan Clarisse (Esther) Devereaux, will be at 9:30 a.m. today at the Convent of the Holy Names. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sr. Devereaux, who was born in East St. Louis, Ill., died Monday. She was 88.

She received Oregon state certification for nursing in 1936 and went to Basutoland, South Arica, where she taught and practiced nursing. She also founded schools and teacher training programs. She lived in South Africa with her host family for 44 years.

In 1982 she returned to Spokane, where she continued her mission work.

Survivors include a brother, Edward Devereaux of Freeland, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Hulda Klein Ritzville, Wash.

Visitation for Hulda Pauline Klein, 88, will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Ritzville. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Philadelphia Congregational Church in Ritzville. Burial will follow at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Klein, who was born in Gackle, N.D., died Sunday.

She married Ray Klein in 1928 and they moved in 1942 to Ritzville, where she worked in various restaurants, at the local bakery, for the Davis Hotel and later for Western Auto Store for more than 20 years. She retired in 1975.

She was a member of Philadelphia Congregational Church, Gritman Senior Center, Ritzville Hospital Auxiliary, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Ritzville Grandmother’s Club.

Her husband died in 1991.

Mrs. Klein is survived by a son, Roy Klein, and two daughters, Velda Miller and Joyce Preston, all of Ritzville; two sisters, Alma Moos and Violet Schardine, both of Gackle; four brothers, William Kinzler of Great Falls, Mont., Reuben Kinzler of Clinton, Iowa, Ray Kinzler of Grand Forks, N.D., and Norman Kleingartner of Gackle; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
