Book Club
Name: Meadows Book Club
City: Spokane
Group history: North-side Spokane group. All-women group of 12 members that has been together for a little more than two years. Members meet once a month on third Wednesday, meeting mostly in homes on a rotating basis for potluck/lunch discussion, but also sometimes in restaurants. Read mostly fiction, picking books by group consensus half a year at a time. Don’t meet during summer.
Book reviewed: “Moody Gets the Blues” (St. Martin’s, 256 pages, $5.99 paper, ISBN 0-312-9650-28) by Steve Oliver.
Group representative: Karen Johnston The review: Author Steve Oliver joined the group for lunch at the Spokane Club. “He was our guest,” says Johnson. “We really enjoyed talking to him and getting his input.” Group doesn’t read many mysteries and, says Johnston, the novel was a more “lighter-hearted book than we usually read.” But wanted to read it because Oliver was from Spokane and had a chance to meet him. “And everybody enjoyed the book. We liked his character. We sympathized with him, that he was vulnerable and that he’d been through a tremendous struggle and was trying to get back on his feet.
And from a woman’s point of view, we liked the fact that he didn’t make his ex-wife out to be this horrible person.”
