World Day of Prayer on Friday

“God’s Tender Touch” is the theme for this year’s World Day of Prayer on Friday, sponsored locally by Spokane-area Church Women United.

There are several gatherings for Friday’s event: 10 a.m. at Park Heights Baptist Church, 5101 S. Freya; 1 p.m., Rockwood Manor, 2903 E. 25th; and 1:30 p.m. Lilac Plaza Retirement Home, 7007 N Wiscomb.

An additional service will be at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, 1829 E. Mallon.

Dinners will aid Lourdes Choir

The Music at Lourdes Choir of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will host two “Neapolitan Afternoon” fund-raising dinners at the Old Spaghetti Factory, 152 S. Monroe.

Choir members will perform during the events at 1 p.m. Sunday and March 7.

Tickets are $15, available through the cathedral office, 1115 W. Riverside, and at the door. Proceeds will help fund a pilgrimage planned for 2001.

Life as black woman topic

Amelia Phillips, a Spokane Community College instructor, will be guest speaker at the Unitarian Universalist discussion group at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Harding Family Center at 15th and Wallace in Coeur d’Alene.

Phillips, a North Idaho resident with degrees in astronautical engineering and archaeology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will discuss what it’s like to be a professional black woman in North Idaho.

A question-and-answer period will follow her presentation.

Party to aid Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day a wee bit early with a party at 6:30 p.m. next Saturday at Affair at the Falls, formerly Salty’s Restaurant, 510 N. Lincoln.

“The Spirit of St. Patrick” is an annual fund-raising event for Catholic Charities. Bagpipes will provide the music, and traditional Irish food will be served.

Cost: $25. Dress is casual.

Retreat center turns 40

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road, will celebrate its 40th anniversary Sunday.

The Most Rev. William Skylstad, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane, will preside over the celebration, which begins at 4 p.m. with the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Mass is at 5 p.m., preceding a buffet dinner.

Reservations, required for dinner, can be made by calling 448-1224. A free-will offering will be collected for the dinner.

Choir festival planned Sunday

Charles Bradley will perform an organ prelude to the annual Methodist Choir Festival at 4 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third. The festival begins at 4:30.

More than a dozen area choirs will perform.

Games will be available for older kids, and child care will be offered for younger children.

The performance is free.
