Bug Oil Controls Insects
With the dormant season here, many gardeners will be spraying with dormant oil to reduce overwintering pest populations. But some worry that those heavy oil sprays may hurt the environment and damage tender plants.
The Natural Gardening Co. has a safe and effective alternative to petroleum-based dormant sprays. Called Bug Oil, it is derived from soybeans and is safe for the user, the garden and the environment, says David Baldwin, the company spokesman.
“Derived exclusively from soybean oil, Bug Oil is lighter than most dormant sprays,” he says. “This lightness means Bug Oil is less likely to burn plants than petroleum oils and may be used year-round for insect control.”
Bug Oil is mixed with water and sprayed directly on plants using a pump sprayer. It is effective against aphids, spider mites, fungus gnats, whiteflies and thrips, the manufacturer says.
Bug Oil is packaged in 8-ounce foil packets and sells for $4.85 each. For information, call (707) 766-9303, or write the Natural Gardening Co., 217 San Anselmo Ave., San Anselmo, CA 94960.
