A Plummer woman was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a man with a fork Jan. 4. The man is believed to be her husband. Ardena M. Garcia, 27, was arrested by tribal police and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, battery and reckless endangerment in the incident. Police said the man, Zeno Jose Garcia, was stabbed in the arm with a fork, threatened with a butcher knife and struck at a Seventh Avenue residence about 6 a.m. He then walked to the Plummer Quick Stop to report the incident.

Sandpoint
The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce hopes to hire a new executive director by February. The chamber received nearly 20 applications for the position left vacant after the departure of Jonathon Coe, who was hired as the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce’s executive director last month.

Bonners Ferry
Boundary County property tax payers who qualify for the circuit breaker exemption have until April 15 to apply. The Idaho property tax reduction program can save qualified applicants up to $1,200 in taxes on a home and up to one acre of land. Applicants must own the home and have used it as their primary residence in 1998.
Household income for 1998 must have been $19,130 or less. Several restrictions apply. Applications and qualifications are available at the Boundary County Assessor’s Office during regular business hours. For information, call (208) 267-3301.

Bovill Elementary School will receive new carpet and furnishings in its library with a $1,000 grant from the Idaho Community Foundation.
Bovill students applied for the grant with the assistance of Bovill Mayor Becky Kellom.

The J.C. Penney store in Kellogg is closing its doors after more than 86 years of customer service. The store announced last July that it would quit business by Jan. 23. The decision by the company came after it closed the Bonners Ferry store. J.C. Penney has been in Kellogg since 1913 and at its current location on McKinley Avenue since 1948.

The City Council has recognized the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization in a proclamation this month. VFW Post 51, 300 W. Mission, has been in Spokane more than 80 years and has about 630 members.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY

With a new sheriff in town, county residents also will be answering to a new undersheriff. Mike Cress, who started his law enforcement career in Newport, came out of retirement to take the position. He has more than 24 years of police experience from Spokane to Anchorage, Alaska.

The Washington Junior Miss program will commence at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21-23 at the Gladish Community Center.

Lincoln County has asked two members of the county advisory board to step down. Gary Blaz and Dan Mueller were asked to resign to make way for membership suggested by the school’s overseer, Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell. Blaz and Mueller were sent letters dated Dec. 16 from the Lincoln County commission. Both are employed by Libby Public Schools.
