Group history: Formed in August 1995 when a group of friends gathered to say goodbye to a mutual friend named Nikky. Decided to keep meeting as a book group. Eight members meet on the fourth Thursday of each month for dessert, coffee and discussion. Read mostly fiction.

Book reviewed: “Under the Tuscan Sun” by Francis Mayes.

Contact person: Christine Peterson The review: The member who acted as host owns a dessert shop, so she held a Tuscan dinner to support discussion of this book by the American writer Mayes and her quest to own a house in Italy (just outside the Tuscan town of Cortona). “It’s one of the few nonfiction books that we’ve read,” Peterson says. “We liked it very much. It was easy to read, and it just made us feel like we were right there in Italy. She has such beautiful, descriptive prose.”
