Gonzaga Prep at Mead

Time, site: 8 p.m., Mead

Summary: Gonzaga Prep finds out if it’s for real tonight. The Bullpups (7-0, 5-0) are the last Greater Spokane League team without a loss, although Mead (6-1, 5-0) is perfect in league. Exactly a week ago, the Panthers handed Central Valley its only loss. Mead, Prep and CV are battling for a top-two finish, which is worth an automatic berth in the regional tournament. In this week’s state 4A poll, CV is fifth, G-Prep tied for sixth and Mead tied for 10th.

Prep is the tallest team in the league, but its scoring has come from the wings, Carly Barnes at 13.5 points a game and Juliann Laney at 10. The key is junior point guard Sarah O’Brien handling the pressure. Mead is built around Morgan Bennett (15.3), but Courney Ferguson (9) has to hit from the outside. Freshman Leah Gonnella has come on to give the Panthers a boost, especially on defense.
