Book Club

Name: Friends of the Cheney Community Library Book Discussion Group.

City: Cheney/Medical Lake.

Group history: Been meeting for 10 years; open to anyone who wants to come. Meets fourth Tuesday of each month, September through May (except December), at the Cheney Community Library (call 235-4490 for information). Group ranges between 15 and 20 members and comprises all ages. Books for each year are chosen the previous spring by committee, and then individuals are chosen to give short introductions and lead the discussion.

Book reviewed: “Le Divorce” (Plume, 320 pages, $12.95, ISBN 0-4522-7733-7) by Diane Johnson.

Contact person: Joan Tracy.

The review: As group chairwoman, Tracy chose Donna Roloff as discussion leader for “Le Divorce.” But the book itself was Tracy’s pick. It involves a young American woman who goes to Paris to support her pregnant stepsister who is embroiled in a messy divorce from her French husband. “I recommended it because I thought it was very witty and amusing,” Tracy says. “I thought the observations about French life and life in Paris were very acute.” But others disliked the book, citing an age-inappropriate romance and an excess of French words. “Too many unsympathetic characters, I guess,” Tracy says.
