Tigercats In Hunt

LaCrosse-Washtucna was no factor in last year’s Whitman County League race after finishing the 1996-97 season with an unbeaten league record.

The Tigercats are back in a big way, as they notched their sixth consecutive win on Saturday with a 70-66 win over Class B eighth-ranked Garfield-Palouse at Palouse.

Cole Schweiger scored 25 points for L-W, which is tied with St. John-Endicott with a 4-0 league record after last year’s 9-16 mark, 5-5 in league.

The Tigercats finished 16 of 22 from the free-throw line and Gar-Pal was 17 of 20. The Vikings’ Jason Fox scored 20.

Grant Bafus scored 23 in three quarters, hitting 10 of 12 from the floor, and added five steals as the Eagles defeated the Colton Wildcats at St. John for their sixth consecutive win.

Bafus scored 51 over the weekend in six quarters. Josh Hames added eight rebounds and six steals, and Derek Miller seven assists for SJE. The Eagles shot 70 percent from the floor.

T-O’s Anthony Buergel scored six in the first quarter and was 4 of 5 from the floor, including two 3-pointers, in the second quarter. Rosalia was outrebounded 33-16.

Junior Jeremy Groth scored 28, surpassing 1,210 for his career, as the Cougars defeated the visiting Crusaders in the meeting of division leaders.

Groth added four assists and combined with J.B. Olsen for 18 rebounds and six blocked shots. NWC’s Gabe Goldman had nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Northport had four offensive rebounds in the final 9 seconds but couldn’t score the tying points. The Mustangs’ Lyle Weilep and Dave Timmering combined for 35 rebounds.
