Try Hangin’ With Mark Curry

Nina Culver Correspondent

Comedy lovers will be hangin’ with Mr. Cooper when Mark Curry performs at 8 tonight at Cavanaughs Ridpath Hotel. The comic is best know for his role as the title character of the ABC sitcom, “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper.”

The sitcom premiered in 1992 and was part of the network’s TGIF prime-time lineup for five years. Curry played a former collegiate basketball star who returned to his old neighborhood to teach high school.

Since the sitcom went off the air, Curry has been making his mark in movies and comedy. He had a cameo role in “Armageddon,” starring Bruce Willis, and he starred in the sports comedy “The Fanatics” last year. An hour-long comedy special featuring Curry aired last August on HBO.

He also plans to play the lead role in the upcoming independent film “A Man is Mostly Water,” a romantic buddy comedy.

Curry first hit the comedy circuit in 1987 after customers at the drugstore he managed encouraged him to take his laughs on the road. During his stand-up career, Curry toured with popular comic Damon Wayans and opened for singer Whitney Houston at the 1991 Super Bowl pre-game concert.

It was a half-hour comedy special on HBO that caught the attention of ABC executives and led to the popular sitcom that still airs in syndication.

His stand-up performances around the country frequently play to packed audiences.

Tickets are $20, available at G&B Select-a-Seat outlets or call (800) 325-SEAT. The performance is limited to those age 21 and over.
