Moscow’S Run For Border Nearly Complete

Moscow took a big step toward stealing away the Border League title on Saturday.

The Bears had two steals in the final 1-1/2 minutes to break from a tie and defeat visiting Post Falls 54-47.

Amber Matthews scored 20, hitting 6 of 8 field goals, and added nine rebounds for Moscow (13-3 league), which has a one-game lead over Coeur d’Alene with two games left. Moscow ends its league season at CdA on Friday.

Janelle Ruen and Desiree Johnson combined for 36 points and 17 rebounds for the Trojans (11-5), who slipped to two games behind Moscow.

Shaylia Davis and Brittany Douglas combined for 19 rebounds and the Vikings had 10 steals to defeat the visiting Knights .

CdA’s Dani Bielec added six assists. The Vikings shot just 37 percent from the floor but held their turnovers down to 10.

Alicia Almond and Carey Sauer combined to hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final 30 seconds as the fourth-ranked Grizzlies edged the fifth-ranked Greyhounds at Pullman.

Sauer totaled 22 points and nine rebounds, and Mary Lindburg added 10 fourth-quarter points for Newport. Christa Brossman scored 20 for Pullman, and Debbie Curry added seven rebounds and four steals.

At Nine Mile Falls, Nikki Petticrew totaled 13 rebounds and eight assists, and tied her career high with 23 points, as the top-ranked Eagles bounced back from Friday’s loss and ended the Cougars’ seven-game winning streak.

Jen Barcus of the Eagles added 22 points. Newport had ended Lakeside’s 34-game winning streak on Friday.
