Lakeside Numbers Dwindle

Defending State 2A girls basketball champion Lakeside lost a second player that coach Lisa Schultz considered a major contributor.

And unlike sophomore Caryn Grubbs, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during soccer, freshman Janell Gibson won’t be back next year.

Gibson, who averaged 5.5 points for four games before requiring back surgery, recently learned that her family is moving to another state.

Despite the loss of two players, the bulk of Schultz’s once-beaten team remains young. Their flashy record notwithstanding, the Eagles have only one senior.

Career scoring update

Updating last Thursday’s story about career scorers:

Wellpinit’s Miranda Payne has 97 more points than listed because she played varsity as an eighth-grader. The smallest B schools, by enrollment, are allowed to use eighth-graders on varsity.

Payne’s total through last weekend was 1,375 points.

Ritzville’s Dustan Arlt had 945 points through last weekend, 51 more than listed. Our figures omitted six games from Arlt’s sophomore season.

Summit meeting

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday turned into a basketball festival on the other side of the state.

Six of the best boys teams in Washington, featuring 12 potential Division I players, got together in KeyArena.

Included were last year’s 4A and 3A state champions, Garfield and Rainier Beach, both ranked fifth in their respective polls and located 4 miles apart. Garfield topped RB 63-54.

Bellarmine Prep, which fell out of the 4A rankings, handed Mercer Island, No.1 in 3A and a top-20 team nationally, its first loss 53-47.

Cascade-Everett, No. 9 in 4A, beat Mariner, unranked in 3A 51-48.
